I noticed my description was changed in Google to something that does not exist on my website and I did not submit. I realized I came from DMOZ. This cost me my position in the keyword 'Jewelry' and moved me from the 5th postion to the 14th position.

I submitted an update and I realize an editor wrote this description. Could my listing please be changed to something that is close to my own meta tags which better describes the items I sell on my website.

Google is automated and I realize probably the only way to fix this is to change my listing through DMOZ. How do I get an editor to do this or work with me to come up with a description we can both agree on?

Description:
Handcrafted one of a kind beaded jewelry; adjustable anklets, unique bead art, beaded bookmarks, beaded necklaces, birthstone bracelets, elegant jewelry sets, handmade watches, beaded fan pulls, bead earrings, and more

>I noticed my description was changed in Google to something that does not exist on my website and I did not submit. I realized I came from DMOZ.

This may be true.

>This cost me my position in the keyword 'Jewelry' and moved me from the 5th postion to the 14th position.

This is, I firmly believe, erroneous, and would require far more than a post-hoc allegation to prove. It is therefore fortunate that it is irrelevant to us. Questions about Google positioning may not be discussed here.

>I submitted an update and I realize an editor wrote this description.

This is true, and this is the way the ODP always works.

>Could my listing please be changed to something that is close to my own meta tags which better describes the items I sell on my website.

This is not an acceptable request in ANY venue; and in any case is also not allowed in this forum.

>Google is automated ...

True.

>and I realize probably the only way to fix this is to change my listing through DMOZ.

Wrong. Don't take my word for it; ask the websites in positions 1-13 -- who obviously know better. But this also is irrelevant: the ODP has the same concern for the Google position of the sites currently in positions 5-13 as it does for yours. Fortunately, that also is zero.

>How do I get an editor to do this or work with me to come up with a description we can both agree on?

You don't. We don't demand that you give us veto power on the descriptions of ANYTHING on your website; we merely ask that you refrain from making the same demand of us. Your site, your descriptions. ODP -- ODP compliant descriptions.

You are asking an unethical thing, which will not even accomplish your ulterior motive with which we must not sympathize.

What you can do at the ODP is what you did -- suggest that the site description be changed. What you can do at Google, you can learn in the Google forums. And if you are looking for someone to index your catalog, then Froogle is the first place to look, and the ODP is somewhere beyond the last.

Editors have a guideline that they must adhere to, we don't key word stuff descriptions and we don't end sentances with "and more" (although it is a common request). For further information you can check here. It isn't that I don't get what you are asking or why you are asking it, but the description you've asked for here isn't one that will ever be approved.

This section is for checking on statuses. Because all update requests in shopping are up to date, I know that you have none pending. You are welcome to submit one after reading the link I've given you (we won't discuss or work out a description with you here as that is not the purpose of this forum) and come back in a month to request a status.

My advice would be to read that link, and suggest something that does adhere to the ODP guidelines rather than approach it from a key word or hype filled standpoint and you are far more likely to be successful. Editors do write the descriptions, and there is no guarantee it will be changed at all--it is absolutely possible your current descripition will be seen as appropriate (I haven't looked at what it says, I'm speaking blindly here).

Good luck, I hope this helps a little. :)

Question

I am surprised, I meant this in no disrespectful way. I just noticed the description for my website is very different than the one I post everywhere else. I am only asking for this description to be changed. I meant no offense I just assumed Google got it from DMOZ because I just started seeing this description everywhere and I did not submit this. I am just asking for advice on how to correct this.

I am just asking for help and advice and in no way should my words be misconstrued as anything other than requesting help.

Please advise.

From the ODP standpoint, there is nothing to "correct."

What you suggested would not correct the real problem, but COULD GET AN EDITOR REMOVED FOR ABUSE!

This is serious. What you ask may seem to you to be "only a little help", but it's like asking the teller at the bank to give you "only a little extra cash back." It's a betrayal of a trust.

Do not ask an ODP editor for this kind of help. It is not fair to them, it is not fair to the ODP, it is not fair to the surfers, it is not fair to all the other sites.

Options

Apparently there is a complete misunderstanding of what I am asking here. What I want to know is how to get a more appropriate description of my website and what are my options?

I really can't understand how my question is causing such problems, I am asking how to correct a description of my website that someone else created about my company.

Please re-read kokopeli's response - what she outlines there is the option you have if you want the description of your site re-reviewed.

Because the description you supplied is not acceptable. The ODP descriptions follow guidelines and yes, your desctipiotn was rewrutten by an editot, because it was keyword stuffed and will can not be used.

This is perfectly normal, 99.99% of descriptions supplied are not acceptable.

Nobody is going to work with you make a compromise on a description. If you feel the description that has been supplied is incorrect as far as the ODP guidelines you may suggest a different one. If your only purpose is to get more keywords in it in order to improve ranking, you are advised not to waste your time or editor's time.
