I'll save you the wait. The site has been rejected and will never be listed. DMOZ does not accept mirror sites including fraternal mirrors - those that contain similar information albeit in a different format. Sorry.

Thank you for replying, oneeye.

I'm not sure I understand your definition of mirror sites. Are you referring the the other domain names that resolve to the same site on the same machine? www.21daycash.com and www.providersfinancial.com and www.providersmortgage.com are all at 209.216.203.7 - the same site/content. Providers Financial has its own legitimate reasons for having multiple domain names, to help its customers find its site, like www.bofa.com resolves to the same site as www.bankofamerica.com and www.wamu.com points to the same site as www.washingtonmutual.com, yet these companies have listings in www.dmoz.org.

I searched Yahoo! for its California license #603A282, and I could not find any other websites owned by this lender, just the usual s.e.-results scraped spam web pages. Funny though that you bring up the issue, as the owner wants me to build a new website and advertise it for him. I told him that I prefer to work off a subdomain, rather than a new domain name, because of this extact issue we are discussing now. I'll forward your comments to him and get his feedback this Monday.

We don't know who the websites are owned by. As you probably know, on the web you have to deal not only with a business's own doorway pages but "affiliate" sites owned by OTHER people but advertising the same service. So we don't really care who owns the website. For business categories, we merely ask whether it authoritatively offers the unique services of a unique business -- if it does, we don't care that the site owner is not the business owner; if it doesn't, we don't care that the business owns the site.

Thank you for answering me, Hutcheson.

This seems to be getting confusing. Providers Financial does not have an affiliate program, but it sure does a lot of advertising on Finance websites like Interest.com, Bankrate.com, and Mortgage101.com. Would such advertising violate DMOZ's guidelines for acceptable websites?

The ODP doesn't have rules about where you can and can't advertise. It just has rules about what we editors are allowed to list.

If the guidelines don't make sense to you, don't worry...no one is indispensable, and we'll do our best without whatever help you would have volunteered had you understood the guidelines.

Either I am hallucinating on LSD or I obviously have much to learn about DMOZ's Guidelines that permit multiple listings for the same company like the ones below, yet deny a single listing for Providers Financial:

http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=washington%20mutual

Washington Mutual Mortgage - Provides residential mortgage financing nationwide.

Washington Mutual - Institution offers a wide range of banking and financial solutions, including online account access.

Washington Mutual Finance - Offers personal, auto, and home equity loans across the United States.

Washington Mutual Home Loans - Mortgage lender offering mortgage financing services nationwide.

And even a listing (affiliate listing?) for an employee, no less:

Washington Mutual - Pam Fink. - Residential lender. Description of available loans with various mortgage calculators. Download a loan application or complete a preliminary form online.

What next's, separate listings for the Information and Maintenance departments?

You've added some I wasn't aware of, thanks.

From our guidelines:

"Sites with overlapping and repetitive content are not helpful to users of the directory. Multiple submissions of the same or related sites may result in the exclusion and/or deletion of those and all affiliated sites."

They don't have to be identical, just variations on a theme.

As for understanding the guidelines, they are immensely complex in application, involving a huge array of factors that need to be weighed, when it comes to some sectors in some branches.
