Hello, I finally made it to this forum.. Read the info..

First, let me apologize for repeat submissions and letters to editors.. I just didn't know it may take this long..

Anyway, it's over half a year since I submitted my site, http://wed-ding.com to:

Top: Business: Arts and Entertainment: Photography: Photographers: Wedding and Events

I would be grateful for status information.

Thanks a lot,

Ben

Hello,

the regional listing indeed made it to DMOZ. But I'm still waiting for the general entry. Could you please let me know the position/status of my submission?

Many Thanks,

Ben

Very possibly, the next time someone works in the "General" category, their purpose will be to disband it, since "Wedding Photography" is a highly geographically-constrained business -- very few photographers will travel from Melbourne to Ulan Bator just to do a wedding.

A number of other "local service" type categories were in the early days of the ODP included in "Business"; now, as we have more listings for them, we have to subcategorize; the obvious subcategorization is by region; and (unless there's a good reason to do otherwise) they may be shifted altogether to regional.

Stephen,

Thanks for your reply. I applied to both regional and general categories since the instructions imply it.. (And I live in Prague at the moment.)

While I agree with your analysis for most wedding photographers, there are some who are truly international in scope - I actually do travel around to cover events. Evidence can be found on the website, http://wed-ding.com itself and I can provide more if necessary.

In fact the general category is much more appropriate for what I do - that's why I'm anxious to get listed there. Could you tell me what's the status of my submission?

Greetings,

Ben

OK, I overlooked that that particular factoid had not been mentioned. (Perhaps all the clickable links had already been followed.) It's waiting in http://dmoz.org/editors/editcat.cgi?cat=Business/Arts_and_Entertainment/Photography/Photographers/Wedding_and_Events which has over a thousand unreviewed sites in the main category or its subcategories. [We're not really likely to list single-photographers in the main category. Do you really travel beyond Europe on business?]

Since your site is in other languages besides English, you could send it to the other language categories for as many languages as you have. Find the English category, and look at the bottom for This category in other languages: , then click on the language and submit the site, you may have to move up the English category structure until you find the Language you need.

For example for http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Arts_and_Entertainment/Photography/Photographers/ - the equivalent French is http://www.dmoz.org/World/Fran%e7ais/Commerce_et_%e9conomie/Arts_et_divertissements/Photographie/Photographes/

Re: Please notify of status for http://wed-ding.co

Stephen,

Thanks. Currently, I see three listings under that category:

Bala Govender and Sons - Photographing weddings, graduations, schools and conferences anywhere in South Africa, even abroad. Photos and videos.

Ground Zero Produkt - Editorial photography focusing on bands, artists, and places with an emphasis on location work.

Wedding Professionals Network International - Showcasing photographers from around the world, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Online wedding photography images, wedding tips and information, as well as wedding photographer biographies.

The first one is a South African photographer whose claim "even abroad" is not supported by a single photograph on the website as far as I was able to check.

The second one is a studio that has nothing to do with wedding photography!

Third one is a commercial "showcase" selling advertising space to photographers. Currently, they have such listings in the US and Australia ONLY.

...

Yes, I do travel internationally taking wedding pictures. I even have to: I have a small "niche' market of candid, documentary wedding photography - which is not for everybody by far. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't find enough clients here in Prague (or any smaller city for that matter.)

So, in fact, being put to the general category actually applies to what I do better than anything else.. And I agree that I'm not a usual case. (Sometimes I wish I had been.. just being able to open a storefront and have passers-by knock on the door would be kind of nice and easy.. compared to the task of actually getting my work to be seen when people search for "wedding photojournalism", etc.)

Over to you,

Ben

Re: Please notify of status for http://wed-ding.co

Thanks, Bobrat, I didn't know about that. In fact I wasn't trying to get too many listings lest I be known as a "spammer'..

I thought two registrations per site were a maximum.. This would be useful, especially if people are actually using DMOZ to look for photographers.

By the way, did you notice how many spamming sites and linkfarms do copy DMOZ content and pose as "internet directories".. Pretty disgusting. But I don't know what their purpose is, anyway.

Best,

Ben

I don't know why they do it, but have you noticed that the ODP encourages people to do so? See the free use license or the large but very uncomplete list of sites using ODP Data for more information. Since we don'T make any money with it - why not let others share the data?

Re: Please notify of status for http://wed-ding.co

I've no idea why they do it, or why people use these sites, but I first discovered them a long time before becoming and editor, when I realized a lot of my sites' traffic come from these DMOZ clones. So I guess they have a use for both site owners and the general public.

Most of them are legal copies, along as they meet certain rules, like indicating the data comes from DMOZ, some however do not follow the rules.
