problems getting listed in open directory

I have 2 questions. The first one is how do you get listed on open directory? In an effort to submit my site to open directory I first read the instruction’s page which had a link to a page with a bunch of categories. The only one that came close to where my site might go was shopping so I clicked on it. .Then I was taken to another page with more categories and the best one for me was gifts so I clicked on it. Then that took me to another page with more categories and the best one was personalized so I clicked on it. This took me to another page with more categories but none were appropreate so I started over going thought the same process but stopping when I got to the personalized page. In the right hand corner was the word description so I clicked on that thinking that was where I should go to submit since there were no other options. When I clicked on description I was taken to a page with several of the categories that was on the previous page with links to other sites from there, but there was no place to submit. How do I get my site registered? Is there one central site where I can go directly to yahoo, goggle, msm and a few other major search engines for free search engine submission? I especially see pay per click as risky for me and would need a better understanding of it. I would consider paying for decent placement but need to know where I can go directly to where instructions, pricing and the option to submit my site and pay is available. I am not talking about paid inclusions. I am looking to pay for a place on the first page of listings where people would type in my keywords to bring it up. The bottom line is I am looking for something like what is offered through yahoo express on goggle and other major search engines.

If you want help with ODP submission, try and give a specific example of which category, what you have posted is too vague to be answered.

We can only help you with ODP [ http://dmoz.org/ ] --- Yahoo etc. are off topic for this forum, and have nothing to do with ODP.

There is no express service, there is no paid service, there is no way get a priority listing by keywords. In order to get listed, you need to take the time to understand ODP and find a category, since it's a free service, we expect users to make their own effort if they want their site to be considered.

ODP is a directory, which has a different concept than putting in keywords to find results, although we provide a search facility, it's very limited in use.

Suggesting a site to us is very easy.
At the top of the page you found there is a link called "suggest URL".
Sometimes a category doesn't have that link. In that case we don't accept suggestions for that category and you must select one of the sub-categories listed on that page first.
After you suggested the site one of the editors will look at your site and decide if it will be listed. We can't tell you when this will be done.

quota's

If there isn't any quotas, what prevent's the directory from becoming another Yellow Pages?

We are a sort of Yellow Pages (only Green).
As far as I know YP list businesses.
We list websites.

Big difference. We list only sites that follow our guidelines and we don't get payed to do so. O, and we don't care if a site is owned by a privat person or a company we list both sites.

There's a big difference between having "a limit on in-takes for submission's on commercial catergories" and having specific criteria for the acceptability sites. We don't have in-take limits, i.e. we don't accept just the first 50 listable sites in a specific category. We do have acceptability criteria, though, so not every site suggested to a category will necessarily be listable there.

And, it time, as the tide of quality comes in, sites that may have been listable a few years ago, find themselves on the bottom of the bay if they don't keep up with (I really want to say bailing, but it doesn't work here) the level of unique content.

This is why we stress time and time again, that a site should strive to be the best in its category, not just a little bit better than the worst.

Submitting your site - takes for ever

I have tried over and over to submit both by business site and my 'hobby' site, to no avail?
DMOZ do not reply, I'm slightly confused as to why.
My sites are related to <topics deleted>.
<urls deleted>
Both of them are reputable sites with a good steady flow of visitors and both are high on search engines with the chosen keywords.

I even tried to submit as an editor and again no response, is it a closed shop or a preferential service that you offer?

hope someone can help!

disgruntled webmaster!

DMOZ doesn't reply. A suggestion is merely acted on, if it's useful, when it's reviewed.

There isn't a closed shop, editors are accepted daily (see the monthly reports!) There are no services, preferential or otherwise, offered to webmasters. The focus is on offering information to surfers.

I'm puzzled as to why someone would think the number of visitors to a site matters to us. In fact, I'm puzzled as to why someone would think successful SEO would matter to us either.

There are a lot of misunderstandings to sort out here.

>> I have tried over and over to submit <<

On the suggestion for that you fill in to suggest a site, did you read the bit that said "submit only once"?
