Currently the service for suggesting a new category isn't working. I guess it is related to the recent problems with the servers.

Is this service on the list of things to be fixed?

Hello,

Do you mean suggest a new category for a current listing? (the update listing form is working just fine for me)

I thought the poster meant suggest a new category for an existing listing.

But that's the "update url" link on the category page, and it's working just fine now.

I wasn't sure what the poster was asking and wanted to cover all the bases.

Hopefully, the poster can choose the response that most fits his needs.

Oops. I was reading too fast, didn't notice that photofox already covered the possibility I was mentioning.

The link I found for suggesting a category is at the bottom of the page here:
http://dmoz.org/help/cats.html#suggest

...but on another subject if you don't normally accept category submissions what is the procedure you follow to enhance the category structure? Is should I be directing these questions to a specific editor?

We only create new categories if there are enough sites to be listed in that categorie. The easiest way for you is to suggest all of those sites (let's say 5 to 10) in the category in which you think the new cat should be created and in the description add a little comment like [I suggest to put this site into a new category xyz]. The reviewing editor will see all these sites with your suggestion for a new cat and he will decide if the new cat is needed.

Unhelpful

There has never been (and I hope there never is) a service for suggesting new categories.

I sympathise a bit with paulmackinley. The link he gave http://dmoz.org/help/cats.html#suggest does seem to suggest new category suggestions are welcome.

I'm not sure whether spectregunner was trying to be helpful but it sounded a little like a dig at someone. In this case the poster was right and I think he deserves an apology.

What spectregunner was responding to was the comment "Currently the service for suggesting a new category isn't working." We don't have and never have had an actual service (which presumably would be a form of some kind) by which someone could suggest a new category. Yes, you can email an editor or staff but the procedure pvgool outlined is usually the best way to show us that a new category is needed. And that really can't be called a "service".

Please read the description of that category:
Sites for physical stores across multiple States or Regions. For sites that have locations in a single State or Region, please suggest the site there.

If the site sells by distance ordering, has a single or no physical presence, includes prices, and delivers internationally or to most of the USA, it may be better suggested in the Shopping branch and possibly in the Regional/.../Locality of the premises (requires verifiable location details on the site).
You might want to consider resubmitting, once, to a more detailed category.
