question about site submission & category Editors

I recently submitted my site and was having issues with the submission page. I requested a status check and they said it was in there and that I needed to wait 30 days for a status of my site being reviewed. I read more into the ODP rules and guidelines, waited 2 more weeks which would be 30 days from the time I submitted my site and requested a status check of when it would be reviewed. I was then answered stating that I just checked 2 weeks ago and had to wait 6 MONTHS to check the status then the thread was locked and closed as I could not ask questions ,respond,or answer.(Which I personally thought was pretty rude) When I tried to send a direct message to the person who replied it would not allow me to.

Am I understanding these rules & guidelines wrong ?????? is there a way to check the status of a site review????? Is there a way to find out if the editor for the category is ACTIVE or NOT ACTIVE?
Thanks in advance for your responses.

That was a status check (provided early). The status was 'recieved'.

The *next* status check you can ask for is 6 months from that one.

As to who is working when and where we can't say. No one is required to work in any specific area, they work when and where they wish within their permissions level.

Allow me to try and help.

This forum has been much more popular than we ever expected, and the workload became unbearable beacuse of the great number of submitters who asked for status checks ever thirty days (almost to the minute). We had request sslipping back as many as seven pages, which created its own set of problems.

So, we huddled and decided that we would put in two rules:

An initial status check (to verify that the submission has been received) 30 days after the most recent submission. We could do it sooner, but that would be too helpful to the bulk submitters and spammers.

Then we said, after the initial status check, people can come back avery six months.

I think what might have happened in your case is that the rule changed during your waiting period.

Since you have received a confirmation that your site has been received, you can come back six months after that date and get a new status (but since you know the category, you can go browse the directory and unlimited number of times to see if it appears.

As far as the editors go, we really only have two kinds of editors: active (which means they have done at least 1 edit within the last 90-120 days) and inactive (which means that more than 120 days have passed, their login has expired and if they want to edit again they must request reinstatement.

If you see an editor name at the bottom of a category it almost always means (there are no absolutes :) ) the editor is active.

Does that mean the editor is active today? Maybe, maybe not. It could be they were very active today, and the next time the server farm updates, you will see the results of their work. It could also mean they are sitting on a sailboat off the coast of Tahiti, taking a well-deserved break from editing. Since editor don't have to report in (other than making an edit every 90 days or so) we don't keep track of these things. If they come back and edit, great! If they don't come back, that's OK, too, and we thank them for their contribution.

So there is really no way for us to know if an editor is active other than by their log in. And it does no one any good to speculate.

But, you might ask, did they edit yesterday, or the day before? Perhaps, but that tells us nothing. Maybe they edited until the wee hours and are hopping on a jet plane for Tahiti even as we speak. Maybe they quit, but never bothered to tell anyone. We'll know in 120 days.

It's important to remember
  • status checks do not speed up site listing. (In fact if we spend too much time doing status checks, we may find we don't have time to edit.) The 6 months between status check requests does not mean it will take longer for your site to be reviewed.
  • anyone higher on the tree (including all editalls and metas) can edit a category
  • you can check to see if the site has been listed yourself. The only reason we allow follow-up requests is to verify that the submission was not accidentally deleted somehow.

Right!
Sorry about that. I could use a strikeout feature here.

Thanks for catching that.
