(1) Several thousand. (Any more precise answer begs the question, "How active is active?") There's not much you can do with the number: it can't affect strategic planning for either ODP administrators or webmasters.

I was just curious about the dmoz project and would like to know more about how it works. I don't want to become an editor or to submit a site.
Can you tell me how many sites are in the directory ?
I try to download the datafile now. So i guess i'll find that out. :)
Can a editor edit any category or only the categoryes where he has rights ?

And the number of editors provided is a tally of the number of editors who have contributed at one time or another, it is not a count of currently active editors.

I got the ideea. I won't spend anymore of your precious time :)
