We worked really hard on our site and submitted to Dmoz a few months ago. Is there anything I can do to improve my chances of getting listed. I believe we followed every rule.

nea,

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to find out if my site has been reviewed yet?

Please take the trouble read the announcement and second important thread at the top of this forum.

They'll tell you that there isn't.

Site Submitted in November

Our site is rich in distinguished content, filled with great articles, and would be a great addition to the directory. Can any editor find it in thier heart to check us out?

Maybe. Someday some editor will look at your suggestion.
When? Nobody knows.

BTW did you read the FAQ and announcemets as aksed in previous answers?
No. Why not. Do it now.
Yes. Why do you continue asking for special priveleges for your site. Why would we give such special attention to your site. Wouldn't that be unfair to all those other people who suggested their site.

Posting here does not expedite the processing of a listing suggestion. If it did, we'd soon be swamped.

Please don't make such a request here again.

(yes, I'm back online :D but only typing very slowly)

Bankroll, I'm currently looking for content on beaked whales, hymn-singing, archaeology, science fiction, norse sagas, and renaissance poetry. Please let me know when you've made a significant contribution to any of those topics, and I'll check it out immediately. And ... can you find it in your heart to drop everything else and start on it now?

If you find this request unreasonable, even insulting, you might ask yourself why.

You submitted when?

From item #5 title you said "Site Submitted in November". The service was down during the month of November so are you sure it was ODP you submitted to?

I am sorry. I read the FAQ. Sorry. I am not seeking special privileges.

Hutcheson, I'm not 100% sure what you mean by that statement (and I don't know what "norse sags" are). If there is some favor that I can do in return I would be happy to help. I apologize if I insulted you in any way at all. That was not my intention. I also have no doubt that you guys work hard on this directory.

Callimachus, I believe it may have been at the end of September and not November. It's was a while ago.

Bankroll, the simple answer is that the directory is so large that we have no idea when a site will be reviewed. There are more categories than editors, many editors can edit in each category and each editor operates in their own way.
Some categories have their own listed editor but that does not guarentee a quicker review.

I prefer category building and I come across many sites I think are good quality, that do not fit the particular category that I am working on. I therefore suggest them to the appropriate categories and forget about them. I think I have suggested 100's of sites none of which are listed yet and most editors have done the same.

Of course when its a question of your own site, we understand that you are anxious to see a result and a bit worried that you have not 'made the grade' or a glitch has occurred. If you are worried that your suggestion has been lost in the crash, then by all means re-suggest it once to the appropriate category - it will not be seen as spam.

Then forget about the suggestion - in the fullness of time it will be reviewed and, hopefully, listed.

Please do not, even in jest, suggest doing an editor a favour to get listed - hopefully you were misunderstanding hutchensons remarks. The wait-for-review times are unpredictable and there is no concept of 'fairness' in terms of first-in-first-out. It is more akin to a lottery, a random chance independant of external influences. We are quite fierce on any attempts to influence the 'lottery' to ensure that the playing field is level for all.

Eric,

Thanks for the kind answer. I am not trying to bribe anyone or anything like that. Yea, I didn't really understand those comments. I guess it was out of line to ask for special privileges. I understand that this directory is big and that would be the reason I want our company's site to be listed. I even volunteered to be an editor, as I think I could be of service to them, but was turned down.

I also understand that the editors and reviewers are busy and probably over-worked that would be the reason I didn't resubmit as I don't need to unessicarily add to the work load. However, I think it has been about 2 years since my submission. So, maybe my submission was lost. So, I gave it another submission. If that is not the case and I was denied, I did a lot more work and added a lot more content since my last submission in hopes of getting approved this time.

Does Google own this directory? Such respected directory should hire some people to run it. Just curious, why they don't not run it like Yahoo's directory or the other majors?

One of us is in a time warp and I don't think it's me :). Eric-the-bun hasn't posted here in months :(.

Does Google own this directory?
AOL owns it and they provide all the servers and systems support.

> Does Google own this directory?
No, it is owned by AOL. But run by a team of volunteer editors, with technical help from a few payed AOL staff.

> Such respected directory should hire some people to run it.
It wouldn't be DMOZ anymore. An important aspect of DMOZ is the fact that it is run by (non-payed) volunteers.

> Just curious, why they don't not run it like Yahoo's directory or the other majors?
Because we are not like Yahoo or other directories and also have no intention of becoming like them. Feel free to use them if they better fit your expectations of a directory.

 with sensitive ears - thanks :)

Basically the realities of life means that at times some things have to take a back seat in order for us editors to earn a living, gruntle their spouses, and maintain some semblence of being a balanced and healthy human being (though this may be news to some editors :D ).

So R-Z posting has been a casualty, as has any form of long-term project, though I've managed quite a respectable drip-drip contribution in one area of the directory.

That's the beauty of editing, you can tailor your contribution to the time you have available and everyone in the ODP is happy with that. It is one of the factors that make it so frustrating for outsiders trying to predict an 'Estimated Time of Listing (ETL)'. In the area I am sort of working in, the average ETL is negative as the majority of sites were never suggested. Overall the average ETL for the directory (if anyone were to work it out) is a lot better than appears.

Oh well, this evening I and Spot have our daily 7 mile forced march which in theory I am doing to reduce my weight, improve all my blood thingies and so on (but actually to impress the rather attractive healthcare nurse I've been paired up with ;) ).

regards
