I applied to be an editor, and was rejected. 2 of the sites I used in my application were from companies I declared an affiliation to. That was mainly because I had trouble finding sites that belonged in that category (a regional one) that were not already listed either there or somewhere appropriate. Would that be likely to be the reason for my rejection. I suspect I was also too wordy in what I said (and I can't say I had no typos either). I applied because I was worried about the apparent lack of editors for the country as a whole, and I thought that startin in my own region was a good idea.
It's usually not a good idea to use more than one URL that you're affiliated with in your application. You should really have at least two URLs in your application that you are not affiliated with.
If you have trouble coming up with two sites, try applying to a different category. Once you are accepted, you will always be able to apply for the category you originally wanted.

And don't think too much about being rejected. I was rejected a couple of times before being accepted.
As for finding sites to submit, I've found sites for my own locality that weren't listed by just letting my fingers do the walking. Just write good descriptions for them when you submit.

remember that a _huge_ percent of applications don't get in, but you can always try again. if you don't care enough to apply more than once, how much will care to actually edit?

If you are applying to Regional categories, another very good way to find sites is by typing the zipcode of the Locality in the search box at Google, Yahoo, or other search engines or directories for the locality you wish to apply for. I found using a zipcode extremely helpful in finding additional sites to build a very small locality in Regional which only had around 12 listings to begin with. After using different SE's and directories, and trying the zipcode approach, the category is now up to around 120 sites, which is very good for a very small Regional locality.
Try applying again, check your application for errors, and be sure and give three good urls in your app. Don't give up if you've been rejected. As others have said, you may not be accepted on your first or second try, just continue to improve on your application and try again.
A bit more advice... start by applying for a small category. After you are accepted and have been with ODP for a while, you can then apply for another category you desire.

So I found a smaller category in my interests, diligently researched new sites, and submitted again. I also had an affiliation with one of the sites I had submitted, but it did not seem to hinder my acceptance.
Be sure to follow all the guildelines listed on the submit page, write clear descriptions, and check your spelling.
