I have tried several ways to accomplish this and have had no success. I would really appreciate it if someone here could help me out. My site is <URL removed> and I would simply like it removed from the directory.

Thanks,
GEOW

If there isn't any reason why the site is no longer applicable to the category, this is not a request that ought to be considered.

Any site that is openly accessible by the public is also offering to accept inbound links. That's the nature of the web.

If you wish to restrict access to your site, apply access control measures.

thanks for the reply

...but neither of these help me remove my site from the directory.

I am not here to argue reasons or natures.

I am looking for a way out of this directory and this point I am considering filing a lawsuit do to the fact that I had requested to be included which I was and I am asking to taken out which I have not been able to do. Something tells me that this is wrong. If I were included because I had not asked for it I would understand and I know how to control with those issues.

Please note the Submission Agreement (bolding mine):

Submission Agreement

In exchange for ODP's consideration of the site I am submitting, I agree

* To be bound by the ODP's Terms of Use.

* To waive any claim related to the inclusion, placement, exclusion, or removal of this or any other site in the ODP Directory or to the title or description of any site appearing in the ODP Directory; and

* To grant Netscape Communications Corporation a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, publish, copy, edit, modify, or create derivative works from my submission.

I also acknowledge that Netscape and the ODP have unfettered editorial discretion to determine the structure and content of the directory and that, because a site's placement in the directory is subject to change or deletion at any time, I may not rely on any aspect of a site's inclusion in the directory. (i.e. "submission" means the title and descriptive information you supply for your site, not the actual website or its contents).

I have read and understand the submissions guidelines, and I'm ready to submit my site

And when people start talking "lawsuit" we stop talking to them, as that is outside the scope of our editorial duties. You'll need to have your attorney speak to AOL/Netscape attorneys.

Thanks so much for pointing that out you saved me some $$$'s. Obivsouly I struck a cord...not the first time someone wanted out...again tells me something here is very wrong.

I would love to know how you think this is a benifit to the community and web as a whole.

I simply want out.

I didn't have a complaint about inbound links? Why did that come up???

Now, why is it so hard to simply delete a site when asked. Can someone expalin that.
The main reason is that we serve web users.

Our goal is to maintain a comprehensive collection of website URLs for web users. Anything perceived effect our actions may have on site owners or webmasters, positive or negative, are only side effects of our goal.

Sorry if I have misread your request.

An ODP listing consists of a title (which is a hyperlink to a website - that's why I mentioned inbound links) and a description. If you're not complaining about the inbound link, then a logical guess is you're not happy with the title and description. Then essentially you're not happy with what other people write on their sites and would like it taken down. I hope I'm reading your complaint correctly now.

In that case, surely you can make the request, but it's then up to the ODP editors to determine whether to honour your request.

Great, that is the point. I feel my site does not benefit the web users that dmoz aims to serve so how do I help in this situation.

Thanks for the response, is it possible that an editor would delete a listing upon request, and what would a reason be for them not honoring the request if they would not delete the listing.

Requests backed up with rationale pointing out why the site no longer meets the ODP guidelines will be evaluated.

Only upon verifying that the site indeed no longer meets the ODP guidelines will an editor delete a listed site.

As with any other sort of URL suggestion, there is no ETA on when the evaluation happens, so if you still see a site listed the deletion request may either be still awaiting review, or have been declined.

No, an editor will not remove (or list) a site upon request. But we have several reason we will remove a site (they are the same for not listaing a site)

These reason are:
1) no site available (just remove your site from the internet)
2) site not accessible (make the site password protected)
3) not a site we want to list (see our guidelines)

After you changed your website just let us know ("update listing") and we will look into it. But never undo the change as you are in risk that we will list the site again.

To reinforce gloria's point above, editors are not legal experts and are forbidden by AOL's legal department to have dialogue with people threatening lawsuits.

Here are contact details for AOL.

Since there's no point in continuing this thread, I'm closing it. Please don't start another one on the same topic.
