Hello,

Our site, www.ukresident.com was submitted and accepted into this category over 18 month ago:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Society_and_Culture/Chats_and_Forums/

8 months ago we were please to see that our site was added (by one of your editors) to another category located here:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/News_and_Media/Headline_Links/

Today I tried to find our site and it was no where to be seen within the ODP.

My question is why was it removed and how can we get it back?

Your assistance in this matter is highly appreciated.

You're using our data but you aren't linking back to ODP correctly. For example, following a Become an Editor link should take you to an introduction followed by ODP application form for the category in question. It doesn't.

What you need to do is implement our license requirements correctly and then we'll consider listing it within Sites_Using_ODP_Data.

Thanks Jim for your prompt response. I have to say I had no idea that I broke your TOS. I will fix it right away. Once done, is it sufficient to post back here for it to be re-listed? or do I need to re-submit the site?

We list sites that consist of original content - if you use our data then that isn't your original content, it is ours. And I don't see anything else on the site that would change my mind. So, no. The category Jim suggested is about it.

But the directory is only a small part of the entire site filled with original content, does that make any difference?

Only if the editor sees it on the site. Assertions in the forum do NOT make a difference -- anything that can't be checked won't be acted upon.

Most experienced editors spend about 30 - 60 seconds on a site. In that time they will get a feel for the site and click anything that catches their eye as potentially relevant. By the end of the 30 - 60 seconds if they have seen no sign of a significant quantity of valuable and unique content then you have lost it. On the other hand if they have discovered something of interest then they will linger a while, and start forming a judgement over a listing. 30 - 60 seconds doesn't sound a lot but it is about the maximum an Internet surfer would give you to prove your site matches their search terms had they found you that way. If your site is an affiliate or other out and out spam an experienced editor is likely to spot it, and have it bagged and tagged within 15 seconds.

So if you are going to attract surfers to stay on your site, and editors are surfers, your unique original content has to be up front, obvious, in the face, screaming at you to read more. So you may have bags of unique content but that is no good if it doesn't jump out of the page and tell me so. I'm also looking at the purpose of the site. If all the stuff that looks like a dozen other sites is at the front my assumption is that it is designed to be like the dozen other sites or to get people to click on the affiliate links or to draw people to the syndicated or rehashed material etc. Summary - tell me, and any other surfer that might land on the site, concisely what its purpose is and direct me at stuff I can't find elsewhere before I latch onto the stuff I can find elsewhere.

Okay, Thank you Jim, Hutcheson and Oneeye for your responses, I'm sure you know better which sites are suitable for your directory and which sites aren't and if you feel that our site now isn't suitable for your directory, I respect your decision. All the best!
