Requesting an Additional Category Listing

ODPers,

I am wondering how I would go about requesting a site be added to an additional category without invoking the wrath of the editor! I don't want to get kicked out, but feel one of our sites may warrant addition to a second category and would like to have it reviewed for such.

Is there a process to do this, or is it simply not allowed?

Thanks

Ben

Merely attempting it is a violation of the submittal policies.

There are certain standard exceptions: such as the "list in each relevant language" and "topical and regional listings considered separately," and there are other not-unusual exceptions (deeplinks for e-texts of books by different authors in the author categories, industrial manufacturers who also sell to consumers).

There are also certain "emphatic-adjectival no way, now go stand in the corner with the other viscious spammers" cases which are very commonly desired (real estate agents in all the little nearby and not-so-nearby localities, retail businesses with separate doorway-spam-domains for each of their products, directories that want to list every one of their topics in our topic (yeah, sure, right after we add all 400,000 Yahoo pages!), sites that want to be listed in a category and all its subcategories (or conversely, in a category and all its parents all the way back to Top).

In between, the territory is reserved for to editorial judgment.

Thanks for the update.

I have a feeling I may fall under the Topical and Regional category, so might have a go.

Should I just submit to the Topical Category and hope for the best? Unfortunately I can't leave an annotation pointing to this discussion, so live in fear of being booted completely and being labled up there with there with the vicious spammmers!

Any suggestions welcome!

Your paranoia is unfounded.

Unless, of course, you are a vicious spammer. ;)

No, two submittals really don't make much of a spammer. The submittal policies allow for one resubmit, and -- it's not really unreasonable that you at least consider making it to a different category. In that case, however, you should be thinking of an "I don't know which one of these categories the site will be listed in" rather than "good, my first site review was delayed, now as a reward I get two listings automatically."

We have to be very careful, because so many people take everything we say as an implied promise binding on our heirs and assigns to the tenth generation:

Editor: "if your site hasn't been listed in six months, you can ask about it again."

Submitter: "What?! You're not promising my listing for 179 days?"

Sigh. We didn't think we were promising a listing at all... but so it goes.
