Second ODP Listing

Q

Dear ODP Staff:

I have a noncommercial site that is mostly targeted at educational institutions. Currently, the site is listed under Iran Country guides and Directories. This is a perfect category for the site. I would like the site to be considered for a second listing under Middle East Guides (Deep linking the Middle East page). The Middle East Resource Guide. covers 16 countries in the Middle East. Many topics are covered including business & economy, Islam, Arab resources, country relations, satellite images and much more.

The point is that presently no one is able to see the page. Obviously, they would not look under Iranian directories and guides for Information about all of the Middle East.

Several educational institutions have linked to both page since the site covers both Iran and the Middle East.

I have looked at similar sites and some have more than one listing. I would like to be considered for a second listing (Deep linking to the Middle East Pages).

Hello:

To make the things clear:

First, it is hard to discuss anything without url.

Second, I do not understand how a non-commercial site may cover "business & economy"?

Third, if you are talking again about the same site - parstime.com, I believe, that it already has a truly international exposure, since at least a half of visitors comes from US and Canada.

In my opinion, the submition of deeplinks to the ODP is not the best promotion policy.

Dear Cossack:

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I have tried to make the Middle East resource guide (http://www.parstimes.com/M1.html) differentiated from other guides by covering topics that were ignored by other guides. Mainly focusing on International relations, sports, satellite images and business resources. Business and Economy is an important part of country analysis. I think that DMOZ (A non-commercial site) also covers business and Economy in the Middle East. In most case, the reason behind political conflicts are economic issues.

At any rate, I would like to apply for a second listing (for the Middle East Resource Guide). I think that it would offer dmoz visitors something new and complement other guides. The majority of the guides are from Arab countries and don't cover Israel, Iran or Turkey.

Again, I have studied the directory very carefully. A number of other sites have more than 1 listings. I have seen that DMOZ has deeplinked to a particular page. So, I just want to get OK before applying.

Hello again:

If we're talking about the same site - you already have my answer. I see that your site performance may be improved without deeplinks submits to the ODP and recommend you - get an advice of a specialist or go to relevant online forums and ask for help there.

Some links you may find here:

Have fun,
Cossack

Dear Cossack:

This is from the ODP site submission guideline:

Please recognize that making the ODP a useful resource requires us to exercise broad editorial discretion in determining the content and structure of the directory. That discretion extends (but is not limited) to what sites to include, where in the directory sites are placed, whether and when to include more than one link to a site, when deep linking is appropriate, and the content of the title and description of the site.

This isn't about improving the sites performance since it's doing well. I just feel that the site deserves to have more than one link since it has covered several topics and the focus is not only in one area.

Your feelings are understandable under the circumstances, but very misleading. Basically you have a link collection.

Compare the ODP, which already has over 10,000 links (including @subcats). Are you REALLY adding anything of value to that--or would we be better off just adding any links from that page that we hadn't already listed? [I don't believe editors without a personal attachment to the site would hesitate even one instant before just mining the links.]

Or compare Yahoo Middle East: 1240 links, categorized into dozens of categories, with descriptions: and ... not deeplinked at all. You have a LOT of work to do on your Middle East page (!) before it DESERVES to be even as deeplinked as Yahoo!

The Open Directory leans over backwards in an attempt to be "comprehensive" and include itty-bitty sites. But one page of links doesn't come within two orders of magnitude of the "EXCEPTIONAL" content required to warrant deeplinking a directory in that large and high-level a category. Just because we list one tiny site in a category doesn't mean we have obligated ourselves to deeplink every page of every slightly larger site that contains that much content.

Hello, again:

I give you an advice, a good advice. I can not verify your identity and your relation to the said site. So here the rules, and I suggest that on this point we can stop the discussion:

Deeplinking URLs

Deeplinking is the process of adding links to sub-pages and sub-domains within a site.

General Rule: In the vast majority of categories and branches, deeplinking is the exception rather than the rule. Deeplinks should offer content that is unique and extremely useful to a particular category. There are no strict rules regarding the type of site that should or should not be deeplinked. Providing deeplinks, in a uniform way, to sites that offer extremely useful and unique content can add value to the directory in a few cases (e.g. categories with very limited content, and where the meat of the available web content is typically buried within larger sites). More at http://dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html

Dear Cossack:

Thanks for the explanation. I have tried to make my point as clear as possible. But, see no reason in discussing this further.
