Hi there

Just a quick question.

I have seen a couple of times on analytics the "editors.dmoz.org" as a referer, but it only ever goes 2 pages into the site. I don't believe it is a spider as it stays on the site for a minute at a time.

Is this an editor finally getting round to looking at the site or is it simply just a bot to get my hopes up of finally getting listed? ;)

Cheers in advance

We don't know. You can't deduce anything from a dmoz hit in your logs - except maybe that ODP knows of your website.

It might be a link checking robot. It might be an editor taking a quick peek. It might be an editor mass moving wrongly suggested websites to better categories. Who knows?

It's to avoid getting website owners all excited that I invariably disable referrers when examining websites. Oh, and don't get all excited if you receive hits with disabled referrers either :).

Cheers for the reply

It seems to hit once or twice ever other month... and then goes no further than 2 pages. It's just the time and the pages that make me think it actually is a person, a bot would hit alot very quickly surely.

I shall sit back and wait for the site to be added then... I know it can take a long time but each time I get all excited because I am that sad

Not really, since many of the 'bots' employed by DMOZ require a human at the controls (Starting and stopping it). An attentive category editor may run link checkers or manual checks, in the categories they edit once a month or more frequently. It means nothing really more than what jimnoble said.
