I'm assuming that the separation you're asking about is that the subcategories are sorted in two groups. Thats what we normally refer to as "sort priority", where each category can have its subcats and @links grouped this way.

In the RDF dump (structure.rdf.u8.gz), this is represented by the element names for the "narrow" and "symbolic" elements being suffixed by a number (1 or 2), to indicate what subcats or @links are grouped in a higher priority group than the basic level which is placed at the bottom. Elements like "narrow2" and "symbolic2" belong to the same level.

Beware that currently subcats named after US states or months are put into a special sort priority without this being visible in the RDF format. This may change.
