Server Error when sending emails to Editors

Were you using a form on a web page? If so, can you give the URL of the page with the form on, the URL of the page that gave the error, the text of the error message, and the approximate time this occured.

Without most of that information, it's going to be much more difficult to figure out what went wrong. Can you also try again now and see if the problem persists.

Hi there,

I got a total of six messages from you - five were identical and one in the middle addressed the server error.

Thanks for letting us know there was a problem. Your request will be reviewed by a resident editor.

Thanks!

PromisChris, did you check the radio button to send a copy of the e-mail to staff each time you tried to e-mail an editor? If so, that may be why you're getting the errors, as the staff mailbox occasionally has problems. Knowing the exact error message you were getting, not just that it was "referring to proxy server error", would have helped us to determine that.

SthenBelle I am sorry that you received 6 messages and I am surprised you even received one, as I was getting server error. My repated attempts somehow got through inspite of the error message. The one reporting the error was when I switched for mac to Windows PC and thought would be lucky that time but still got the error.

RZ-Administrator, to do that and be able to tell the exact message I have to retry sending a message to the same editor.

SthenBelle, I'll send one more test message to you to get the exact error message I am getting. I hope you won't mind.

RZ_Administrator and SthenBelle.
OK. Just tried to send a test message to SthenBelle. It may have gone through like the ones before but at my end I get the following error message:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /cgi-bin/send2.cgi.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

The URL of error message was: http://www.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/send2.cgi

No I did not check the Staff button.

Thanks

motsa and SthenBelle: By the way, as I read in post 531: "Your site suggestion has only been received if you get the "Thank you for your suggestion" screen. Anything else and it hasn't gone through".

Since SthenBelle received my message in spite of the error I got, the above statement doesn't seem to hold true.

As sending an email and suggesting a site are two totaly unrelated things the statement it totaly valid.

Maybe, but not entirely different. In both cases an online form is used.

Yes, but two completely different forms performing two completely different actions.

Of course, knowing how much editors dislike getting e-mails from site suggesters, this might be categorized as a "feature" rather than a "bug".

OK all. Thanks for your contribution. Whatever the purpose of the online form I just wish whenever we get a server message there was a way to know if the form got through or not.

Come to think, more and more of this world is getting more and more hungry, we'll be begging very shortly for a few drops of precious petrol and here we spend our time what seems - in comparison - to be trivia.:(

I am the first to blame, so, since I started this thread I might as well call it off. It's up to the moderator of course.

Cheers and all the best for all and DMOZ.:)

Same Problem

I have got the same problem with using the contact form to get in contact with an editor. I tried it with different browsers but I'm getting allways the same error message:

Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /cgi-bin/send2.cgi.
Reason: Error reading from remote server

Kind Regards,

Christian

Yeah, there's a bug that AOL's staff are aware of. The messages do seem to get through though.

People retrying is the reason why getting half a dozen copies of a message from a civilian is not uncommon.
