Guys,

I just received the great news that I was accepted as a DMOZ editor. Should we share this with the world, friend, internet, in the forum and in our profile the information that we are DMOZ editors? Or we should rather be quiet so that people would not try to get to us by different ways to make their sites being listed... even if the category is not proper.

What do you think?

You have to live with what you do online. So be careful: you can't recall information.

Some people don't say much if anything; others are widely known.

I'd recommend starting out telling only close friends and small online circles, and letting world+dog have to hunt for the information.

Most people won't care -- they watch golf on TV in their spare time, and what you do in yours doesn't matter to them. And unfortunately, many people who DO care will only care because they think you might be their ticket to the unimaginable riches just awaiting them on the internet -- and it doesn't matter to them that they are your ticket to the exciting world of ex-editership. (It's not a good deal for you: do whatever it takes to avoid them.)

I would advise caution. When I was first an editor, I communicated more. After some bad experiences I tend to hide a bit. I only email anyone regarding site submissions by using a throw-away/anonymous email, and I do not put my editor name on those emails.

..and out in the Real World, friends and family will totally fail to get your enthusiasm and consider you to be mad, boring or both :). I don't mention it any more.

It also very much depends on where you edit, I feel quite safe and have had no problems because I edit in a category which a lot of people already regard as being 'mad, boring or both'. I merely respond with folk dance information to the few 'irregular' inquiries I've had and for some reason  I never hear from them again. It is probably best to keep yourself secret and private until you have found your feet.

welcome to the ODP

regards

PS have you found the internal forums yet?

I guess that I am blessed - everyone who knows I'm an editor is proud of me, especially after my recent permissions change.

Of course - it could be that everyone I've shared this information with are already quite insane.

Who knows? ;)

Hello,

thanks! I agree completely ;) I am very happy to be the editor and I am proud but I understand that this is a real responsibility. I did not tell anybody, even in my discussion forum about it because I want to avoid any pressure from anybody even potentially. Maybe gradually with time I would let others know.
Of course my husband knows about it but he does not care anyways ;)
I need to learn so much, now I feel that DMOZ is much more interactive and responding than ever before since I was able to see different feedback for the websites. This also allows me to understand how to properly jugde the sites.

My family and friends think I'm a bit crazy as well. I've tried to convince some of them to apply to become editors but they never take the bait.
