Windharp just told me that we are not supposed to use signatures..

There are so many signatures that it sure looked fine to me.

If that is true, that we aren't supposed to use signatures if we are not editors, then I think that is sad.

I can understand a three year wait to get into DMOZ -- but only editors being able to use signatures I can't understand.

In fact, it makes the site seem a little peasantesque --

Because a lot of people were posting here only to get the [presumed] benefit of the link. Lots of "me too", and off topic posts, so disallowing a signature reduces that problem. There are some who still try to post links to their site that are off topic, those posts tend to be edited or removed by a moderator.

Those who do it peristently end up geting banned.

Well, personally I think it detracts from the site.
and for me, it's a way of sending me away...

I just realized that I don't fully understand your answer... I'm not sure whether you are saying that posts that are off topic cause people to get banned, or that use of signatures causes people to get banned.

I am very sad about this because I was enjoying this forum very much -- but for me, as you say, life is short and if I want to increase the awareness of B12, then I have to stay on topic, including using only forums where I am allowed to do that.

This forum is only to discuss subjects related to DMOZ. Not to promote your site.

This is exactly why we disabled that in the first place, because there were too many people using this forum as a way to advertise their sites (as opposed to asking about ODP-related stuff). If you're only reason to post is to get some free advertising for your site, this is not the place for you.

Off topic posts can get someone banned. Creating pseudo signatures to get around the "no signature" setting will get your posts edited but generally wouldn't get you removed.

Making lots of posts that are only about promoting their sites, and not stopping when they are asked to, is among the things that may get a poster banned, because it's not what this forum is about. There are forums where webmasters are allowed to post links to their sites to their hearts' content. There are other forums where nobody is allowed to post a link at all. This forum takes the middle road; you are allowed to post your URL if it is for a particular reason, but not to use it in, for instance, a signature.

I was asked to edit my signature because it pointed to a site of mine that I (indirectly) make money from.
