Site Redirection

Hello, I've recently submited a dog site to the dmoz directory and at that time I didn't have any intention of changing the domain, however I ended up buying a smaller and simpler domain for the site I submitted.

I know in the submission guidelines it says that you don't accept sites that redirect so what should I do? Should I submit the new domain or wait until the older one is listed and then modify the submission (this will probably take a long time). What is you guy's advice.

It's not a matter of "accepting" or "rejecting", but we certainly prefer to list the true domain, rather than one which simply points to it. So if you would like to suggest the true domain for review by a volunteer at some stage, please go ahead and do so. One extra suggestion won't have you branded as a spammer.

By the way, we do not list so-called "vanity" domains which merely frame the true site. Instead, we would always list the URL which carries the actual content.

The best thing is to suggest the new domain to the same category with a note in the description saying '[replaces suggestion of www.yourdomain which redirects here]' or similar.

This should hopefully save the editor the time involved in finding out about the redirect.

Note - we seem to be currently experiencing some trouble with site adds from some places (you may get a proxy error - in which case wait at least a day before trying again though, given it's the weekend, possibly waiting til Monday evening USA west coast time might be safer).

.htaccess 301 Redirect

The smoothest way to redirect your visitors is to use an .htaccess redirect. This has no delay since before a page is served to the browser the server checks first for an .htaccess file... if it sees this the old page never loads, instead visitors are sent directly to the new page.

These are a few .htaccess redirect codes that I've used that might come in handy for you. This is not a complete list by any means, but it took me ages to find how to do these so I'll save you the hassle and list them here. Oh, and please don't email me with questions about how these work, like I said, I found these with the help of others..
