Hi there, I'm hoping to get the status of our site www.shojidesigns.com

I have submitted it a few times in the last 3 or 4 years. The most recent submission in February 2004 was in http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Construction_and_Maintenance/Materials_and_Supplies/Doors_and_Windows/Wooden/

It seems waiting a year or so is not uncommon from my reading in the forum. I have been trying to find the most appropriate category, assuming that's why I was rejected, and everyone I choose seems to need an editor which would explain the delay. Not great luck.

We are now also offering supplies for sale, should I submit to a second category more appropriate for these?

Thank you for your time - Frances

It's waiting for review in that category, I would advise against submitting to a second one.

Nine Months Later

When will the baby be born?
Still waiting to be added to the directory. Considering all that I've read about competitors (as editors) holding up others submissions - I'm starting to beleive it considering how long this has been going on.
Any news would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
Frances

Believe what you will, that sort of talk doesn't go down very well in this forum, though you'll find others where you can throw the same sort of comment out to great applause. Editors proven to be abusing their position by treating competitor sites unfairly are booted out, it is as simple as that. It really is highly offensive to imply otherwise. If you read the FAQs on this site it might enlighten you. Editors are volunteers who list sites in their spare time when they want. Submissions are only suggestions and editors get sites from all sorts of other sources. Sites can take 2 minutes to 2 years before an editor gets to them, no-one can predict. Maybe longer, who knows. It makes matters worse when the directory is clogged up with duplicate submissions, 5 other copies in your case scattered around, wasting editor time when they could have been reviewing sites.

Of course, it would be a bit foolish to start that sort of talk if your site were already listed wouldn't it? http://dmoz.org/Business/Consumer_Goods_and_Services/Home_and_Garden/Decor_and_Design/ ;)

No offense intended!

I did check yesterday before asking and it didn't come up. I typed in the business name - that seemed fool-proof - important for me.

My apologies for offending anyone. It is difficult to play by the rules if you don't know them. I didn't know I was screwing up by resubmitting until I found this forum and I didn't find this forum until I'd spent alot of time reading up on SEO online. The regular joe biz owner trying to get their site out there wouldn't have a clue which is partly why you are all overwhelmed with submissions. You are all over worked and underpaid as far as I can tell.

I believe a site review for ODP is a service that should be paid for. The ODP is an important directory for businesses to be in and that it is still free and you all are still volunteers boggles the mind.

I'm sorry that my frustration got the better of me yesterday and THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING AND PLACING OUR SITE!

We don't! That is what makes our content unique. If payments were introduced it would degrade the whole concept and most editors would abandon it. There are already enough paid directories in the market, another one simply isn't needed.

Businesses think it is important, we don't care really what they think, to us it is a fine hobby and nothing more. We serve our users not webmasters, never have done, never will do, and that is another thing that makes us different from all the rest.

All right, I confess. I and several thousand other editors have chosen -- every day for the last year -- to do something other than review your site. As such, I'm apparently part of your grand conspiracy. But the conspiracy is far larger than you have so far imagined! Not only your site, but about 21 million other sites, have been singled out for this attention. And every time I review a site, I commit this vile deed against every one of the other 21,999,999 (or so) sites on the net.

But this isn't all! Billions of people all over the earth are active participants in this same conspiracy -- editors only reviewing a few dozen, or hundred, or thousand, sites a year, and the non-editors (the vast majority) not editing ANY sites! Multiply it out: 4+ billion people, 22+ million sites, and that makes almost one hundred quadrillion acts of non-editorship, each and every day! My feeble 22 million non-reviewals seems pretty insignificant in that light, but you're welcome to list me as a co-defendant in your class suit against humanity.

We're overwhelmed because people don't read the guidelines on what to submit, how to submit, where to submit, and not to resubmit all over the place. These instructions are easy to find when you go to the submission form, they're not exactly hidden. Over-worked, no. We do what we can or want, when we can or want. Underpaid, no, the job satisfaction is tremendous, you'll find no real editor would accept money even if offered and sanctioned.
