Site Status

kobescent

I submitted www.kobescent.com to Dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Designers/Basic_Service/K/ and about 5 weeks ago and hoped to get an update on its status. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

We'd really appreciate a clickable link to the dmoz category, as described in the posting guidelines for this forum.

This isn't an attempt to be picky, doing it this way makes it much easier for us to check.

[added] From the timestamps, it looks like you were reading those guidelines while I was typing this. Thanks!

Re: Sprry... with a clickable link :) Site Status

It's awaiting review in that category, along with a few dozen others. Note that the few dozen is just for the letter "K" though, that's a pretty backlogged area. I'd be prepared to wait a while if I were you, though we might both be pleasantly surprised.

Feel free to check back here in a few months if you haven't seen it listed by then. Should you do so, please reuse this thread rather than starting a new one.

Re: Status for Kobescent.com?

I'm sorry to say that the status is unchanged. The area is still backlogged. I wish I had better news for you.

Re: Status for Kobescent.com?

Thanks for the response. It is very frustrating though for a category to be very backlogged (which as I have seen on this site is a fairly common status) but when I have applied 3-4 times to be an editor (for categories MUCH smaller than the one I am applying for) I keep getting rejected. My last attempt was rejected and I was told to apply to a smaller category. I was in a very deep subcategory that only had about 30 sites listed.

So I have a question that you may or may not choose to answer :). What category should I apply to be an editor in. I would like to do something with internet/web design, promotion, graphic design, etc. since that is my specialty.

I am sure I would do quite well as an editor because I have the time (I work on a computer about 11 hours a day) and have the motivation (because I understand the frustration of being in a category that never seems to be updated).

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Status for Kobescent.com?

While I have nothing to do with the editor approval prossess, I do know that some applications get turned down not becasue the category is too large, but because either the category is a major spam magnet that requires more editing experience (we don't want to toss new editors into categories where they would likely fail) or because while the category is small, the unreviewed pool of sites (which you cnanot see) is huge. There are categories with 30 sites and 300 unreviewed, which would ovewhelm and doom most new editors.

Hope that helps. The fact that you were encouraged to seek a smaller cat tells me that the meta editor who reviewed your application saw something worthwhile there.

Re: Status for Kobescent.com?

Sometimes a category that seems nice and small cannot be given to a new editor, because there is large heap of unreviewed sites waiting that would just overwhelm a newbie.

Meta editors often say that it is a good idea to start out in a category of your home town. Have a look at the subcategories of Regional: North America: United States: Indiana: Localities: B: Bloomington. You probably know lots of sites that could be added. Choose a subcategory, find three sites that fit, write fine descriptions and try it.

By the way, I'd know a site missing in the Business and Economy: Internet subcategory. ;)

Yours,
Robert

Let me repeat, because it's worth repeating: if we don't want people as editors, we do NOT encourage them to re-apply for ANY kind of category!

The category you chose might have had dozens of unreviewed sites -- most of which were unlistable -- making it a nasty place to start editing. Pick an easy spot -- many people pick their own neighborhood or hobbies, get in the door, do a spot of Googling and a couple dozen edits, get a free glimpse of the size of the unreviewed queue that was keeping you out of the other category, become eligible for "Greenbuster" status....small bites, and soon enough we'll be shuffling the nasty inedible bits onto your plate.
