Site submission

Hi Ed,

I am enquiring about the status of my submitted URL www.elanguest.de/index.aspx

I have submitted our URL three times over the past 3 months and I am worried that I may have over submitted or there may be something wrong with my submission.

www.elanguest.de/index.aspx is the absolute URL for our German site and I hope that this is not causing a problem in any way.

I did not realise that on the first submission I submitted www.elanguest.de but since submitting that I have had some problems submitting that to the likes of Altavista as it is apparently not the absolute url. I contacted our webmaster and he told me to try www.elanguest.de/index.aspx so I did and that was two months ago and nothing seems to have happened so far....

I am trying to get into the www.dmoz.de so that it serves the German Market it is designed for. Category- World: Deutsch: Freizeit: Reisen: Spezialreisen: Sprachreisen: Englisch: Malta

I kindly request that someone shed some light on the matter regarding the submission process of this URL.

Best Regards

Apparently you submitted neither http://www.elanguest.de/index.aspx nor http://www.elanguest.de/, but http://www.elanguest.de/content/index.aspx - and this one was submitted to World: Deutsch: Freizeit: Reisen: Spezialreisen: Sprachreisen in February and had to be moved to the Englisch: Malta subcategory.

Anyway, I as one of the editors of World: Deutsch: Freizeit: Reisen have just reviewed all submissions in that category, and your site is now listed there under the URL http://www.elanguest.com/.

Yours,
Robert

Regional Submision

Hi Robert,

Many thanks for your quick response to my enquiry in the forum (especially on a Sunday)

In your reply you have stated that our request to have www.elanguest.de added to the German dmoz directory under the category> http://ch.dmoz.org/World/Deutsch/Freizeit/Reisen/Spezialreisen/Sprachreisen/Englisch/Malta/- was rejected

I am a little concerned as to why I our German site has not been allowed on the Dmoz directory.

The main school website elanguest.com has been translated into 5 languages and these five languages are all part of the same website which is based in Malta. However www.elanguest.de is run by a separate franchise in Mannheim Germany. The German site is serving a different purpose and targeting completely separate market than the .com. For example the .de site has different - content, description, special offers, terms and conditions, FAQ pages, contact details, forms, services etc, than the .com site.

As far as I can tell from Dmoz’s T&C and various articles, parent companies that have regional offices may be listed in different regional categories. For example www.xerox.de is listed in World: Deutsch: Computer: Hardware: Peripherie: Drucker
And www.xerox.com is listed in
Business: Consumer Goods and Services: Office Products: Equipment: Copiers

I know Xerox is not the best example but we are in a similar position. The school itself has its own website (.com) and we have our own franchised website for our agency in Germany (.de). In fact Elanguest is even more of an exception because we are two separate companies, registered in different countries, with different VAT numbers etc.

Just one other detail, I also note that in the guidelines Dmoz requests- ‘Submit non-English sites to the appropriate category under World.’

Please could you reconsider our application as it is very important for the .de site to be listed in the German Dmoz directory so that we can serve our home market?

Many thanks

Sincerely,

Mark Holland

He didn't say you were rejected, he said "your site is now listed there".

The public side hasn't regenerated yet, but the site will eventually show up.

Re: Regional Submision

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your reply.

Your fellow editor has said that he will add www.elanguest.com and not our requested www.elanguest.de

Our situation is that we are tying to get our own site listed and not our parent companies site (.com) as we have nothing to do with them as far as the website is concerned.

On your recommendation I will check back when Dmoz has regenerated.

Many thanks to all,

Mark

Re: Regional Submision

As to why http://www.elanguest.com/ was listed and not http://www.elanguest.de/ see our guidelines at http://dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html#multi-lingual (those guidelines have changed recently, so there may be other sites still listed that were treated differently).

as we have nothing to do with them as far as the website is concerned.

To a reviewer it may not be obvious that both addresses belong to different companies. It looks as if elanguest.de is nothing but an exact translation of the contents on elanguest.com. According to the whois database elanguest.de does not belong to a German company, but to someone from the same address as the owner of elanguest.com.

By the way, if the site is published by a German company, German law (not the DMOZ guidelines) requires an imprint including some specified information, placed in a prominent position. I don't think that the contact information on "Unterstützung > Kontakte" meets these requirements.

Re: Regional Submision

I'll contact the parent company immediately, and request the changes so we completely comply with your guidelines, I hope this helps. Sorry for the inconvenience but it's sometimes hard to handle all this webdesign / marketing / contractual obligation / SE stuff at once!! I'm quite new at this!
Ideally of course it means a great deal to us to be listed seperately but should the above not be sufficient or we can't get hold of the developers we'll be glad to accept your first suggestion.
Thanks for your attention, it is appreciated..
