Site update - advice please

Hi all

I thought I'd check for some advice here before troubling an editor with a submission.

So, I had a site listed in a category, where it's been for a couple of years. Common-sense says it's definitely the right category and looking at the many other sites listed in that category, they are all the same type of business and the same region.

The business moved from one part of the UK to another, so I submitted an update to the description along the lines of "[3 words explaining what the business does] covering [town 1], [town2], [town3]". This was very similar to the previous entry apart from the towns listed. In the explanation box I put that the business had moved location, and please could the desciption be updated accordingly. When I came back shortly after, my site listing had disappeared.

I wasn't expecting an editor to get to it so quickly, so my question is, when an update is submitted for a site, does it disappear from the list until the update is approved?

I don't have any other sites listed in dmoz, so there's no chance of a conflict of interest and the business description and 3 towns listed are all clearly stated on the homepage, so even if an editor had got to it so quickly it would have been easy to see this was a valid update request. I can't see it moved to anywhere else either. So if sites don't disappear off the list during an update request, is it possible that something went wrong with the technical side of the update?

If the most plausible explanation is that an editor got to it very quickly and decided I'd not followed the rules properly, then I'll check the rules again and try and submitting the site, but I didn't want to annoy an editor by submitting, if it's actually just waiting for the update to be approved.

Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Charles

P.S: The search engine still points to the category where it used to be, but obviously it's not there any more when I click the link, although I presume this is just because the search index hasn't been updated for a while?

Hi Charles

the most likely explanation is that the editor handling it had permissions in the old category but not the new. So the site is probably waiting in the new category for another editor to list it.

As you've found out, update requests are often handled very promptly indeed :).

An editor processing one will usually re-evaluate the website as well as looking at the update request itself. It seems likely that your website has been moved to a different category, as it might need to be if its geographic scope has changed.

I'm curious too so please PM me the url.

In the aftermath of our systems problems, our rudimentary search is still working on quite an old snapshot of the database. You can see its date at the bottom of the search results page.

Ever thought about becoming an editor, charles? You sound like the kind of fair minded individual that we'd like to have working with us, :D .

I'd not thought of becoming an Editor but I'd certainly consider it. Is it best if it's in the same category as my site (was!) so that I'd understand the businesses of the other applicants? I've also got hobby interest in a complete different category. Neither of them has a direct editor (or at least they both say "volunteer" at the bottom.

Just noticed Eric-the-bun is in bognor. That's just round the corner from me... Small world. My wife is having breakfast in the (bognor) Royal Norfolk Hotel tomorrow morning for her networking meeting :D

Jim, I'll PM you the URL and old category.
Many thanks for the quick replies.

I'm not a meta editor, so they should really be the ones to advise you, but as long as you edit fairly and impartially, by treating all other sites the same way that you treat your own, there is no reason why you couldn't edit there.

You would just need to disclose any site you're affiliated with, but, that would be so, no matter where you edit.

Editors edit in categories they have an interest in and some knowledge of, and try to build them up as a community service for web surfers, :).

That is what the "update listing" link at dmoz.org is for. It's working again: so posting a suggestion here is unnecessary (and not allowed).

Editors almost never respond to site suggestions. Why should we? If the suggestion is a good one (based on ODP guidelines), we can just do it. If the suggestion ISN'T a good one, then we can just not do it -- and it's better not to get into wrangling with people who don't care about the guidelines anyway.

our site updating

I am sure 99% competitors of same industry is at "natural stone>slate" directory.

ODP shows;

Specifically, this Update Listing form should be used to

Replace an old URL with a new URL when it has changed.
Correct spelling and grammatical errors in the site's title and description.
Suggest a new title when the title on the site has changed.
Suggest a new description when the scope of the site has changed.
Suggest a category more appropriate for this site
