I am trying to submit my first site to DMOZ and am trying to do the best job possible.

To find an example of an already submitted site (primarily where I should be located in the directory) I did a search on one of my competitors. I see that they are listed in 3 different sreas of the directory but I understand I can only submit my site once.

How can a site be listed mutliple times? Am I missing something. My only goal is to put my site in the most appropriate place(s) possible.

Thank-you.

If a site is listable in both Regional and in one of the Topical categories you are allowed to suggest the site twice. Once under the correct topical category and once in the place your company is located in.
If the site is in different languages the site may be suggested to all of these languages.
Any more listings are only for the editors to decide.

There are many reasons a site might be listed multiple times, but the fact that it is your competitor is not one of them.

The submittal policy flat says to submit to the ONE most appropriate category. But there are certain standard exceptions (that is, it would help editors, and editors would be happy for you to violate the policy.)

(1) A site with content translated fluently into multiple languages, can (please!) be suggested to a category in each language.

(2) A site with both global relevance and local special interest may be suggested to a Regional category and a Topical category.

Thank you both for such quick responses. I'll go ahead and make just one submission after a bit of head scratching into which directory would be best.

FYI I don't believe in the example I had looked at that the multiple submissions were a regional or language issue because these are the three directories the other domain I mentioned fits into.

# Computers: Software: Internet: Website Promotion

# Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Authoring: Online Tools: Keywords

# Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Promotion: News and Media: Newsletters

While my domain certainly fits as well into both the first two categories, the third doesn't apply as of yet anyways.

Best regards,

Chris

At one time in Computers, web development sites were multiply listed much more often than they are now. It was impractical to maintain, and invited webmaster abuse, so we have cut back considerably.

Presumably you have a place where you do business, around which you might consider meeting face-to-face with potential customers. So a Business subcategory of your locality (office or home office) would be a reasonable second suggestion.
