I am currently working on 2 sites that make use of ODP data.... one of them is about gambling services and sites, and makes use of everything from here...
http://www.dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/
...down. The other one is an adult webmaster resources site that uses multiple dmoz categories and then drills down down from there.
I wanted to hear some thoughts on submission before I submitted, but in particular I wanted to hear about the following:
1.) Can gambling and adult webmaster resources be even listed in this category, or are they considered ‘adult’ and should be listed elsewhere.
2.) Does simply having a pretty, functional, site that makes use of odp (and gives credit to odp as listed in tos) make it likely that the site will be admitted, or must you ‘add value’ in some other way? In other words, if I got a designer to make me a nice attractive template, made sure everything was easy to navigate, spelled correctly, links worked, etc, added a bunch of ccategories and data from dmoz, would the site be eligible for listing, and a likely canidate to get accepted?
3.) in your opinion, would it be better to see if the site could be listed elsewhere in ODP first? The descriptions in this category are about the worst I have ever seen...
“Directory from the ODP.”
“Web directory powered by the Open Directory Project.”
“Live data. Anaconda.”
“Directory using live ODP data.”
“A directory from an old copy of the ODP.”
....these really don’t describe anyhing, IMHO... can you tell anything about what these sites are about? I guess if all you do is put dmoz on your site, that is about all you can expect for a description, but some of these sites seem to have their own content and it is totally blown over.
