Hello guys,

Just a general chat,

How important is domz?

my site meta tags eg: title, description and keywords each are 100 percent, i have 300 links back to my site, no broken images, unique content and i could not find one search engine that was not giving me 100 percent on everything.

BUT

I am not in the top million at a guess of any search engine all bar one msn.co.uk, where i am 7th out of 5 million. so i should be happy having msn but i only get one or two hits a day from them.

Ive snooped all of the top 20 search engines sites that sell the same items as myself using keywords, and not one has good meta tags and without being to cruel, the sites was rubbish.

But all have one thing in common, ALL was listed in domz, as my site is not listed and maybe never will be with domz, does'nt this sound a little unfair.

Is there anyway i could slip the editors a few quid so i could sneak in the back door ;) (just kidding)

Kind regards

David

Bribery is seen by us as the biggest sin on earth.
Even joking about it might get you banned from R-Z and DMOZ.

misunderstood ?

I never have or ever would think an editor would take cash ( im sure if they did the editor would edit no more) and again it was a joke i can not make that any more clear.

So please take a chill pill ,no one is pointing fingers ( but i can see why you would get a little upset).

To stop anyone getting hurt by that joke can you comment the last part out?

regards

Anyway its good too see you take such a hard line approch, that must put a lot of peoples minds at rest.

Ps

Did any of you have a comment about the real issue about how important domz is and how unfair it can be on us small folks not listed.

This is how I see it. The value of a listing in dmoz, to those who are listed and care about such things (as many of the people whose sites are listed don't, fortunately), isn't primarily in the dmoz.org site listing. The value is google directory and all the other licence takers who copy and use our data. Right?

Now, we officially don't care about google and other licence users. Most of us don't care inofficially either, though I know some do - I sure don't, so I might not be a good person to talk to. But what we do care about is making the dmoz as good as we are able to, each in the corner of the directory we work in. The result of our work is that, yes, the directory is indeed good enough that other sites want to use our data. Which is why it's valuable to you and other webmasters.

So the way I see it, the best thing we can do for you and your colleagues is to keep doing our thing cos we love it, and not change to accommodate webmasters. For that would devalue the directory, making it less interesting for google et al.... and less interesting for you. And the users. And us, because editing would probably be less fun.

To me, dmoz is indeed immensely important. I devote a lot of time to it, every day, one way or another, because it's so much fun working with it. But that's a different kind of importance :)

(sorry if this is incoherent - I have a cat on my laptop and blocking my right arm)

You have absolutely no idea how close you came there to getting your website permanently banned from ODP. To reinforce the comments of others, we take such comments, even when made in jest, extremely seriously.

Nobody gets to do that.

There isn't a job to give. You have to make one for yourself. The ODP is a volunteer agglomerating cooperative. (For Bill Gates, that means "vile commie plot". For people of good will, it means "if you want to work on something like what we're doing, and you're willing to work up to (or down to) our standards, we'll share our tools and provide hosting."

I think that silly comment i made early in a differant trend stop all hope i had of making a editor, what is a shame as i enjoy surfing other people sites.

Anyway if i butter the editors up with kind words over the next few weeks or years :) i hoping all will be forgiven but i guess not forgot?

The most effective way to get forgiveness is to apologize and stop with the offense. In this case, that means any kind of attempt to manipulate -- flattery and obloquy are just two faces of abuse.
