Some further clarity on ODP attribution sought

I imported about 300 links from DMOZ to a web director I am setting up & have so far included about the same number from my own work, getting links from diverse sources and inserting them manually. I still continue doing so and expect when I go online to have users submitting their links.
I have also largely created my own categories or modified the DMOZ cat.

My question is how can one appropriately credit DMOZ as they require with that http://dmoz.org/become_an_editor/ when my links do not come exclusively from them?

I have seen some directories which seem to have all their content from DMOZ (which is not the case here) and so the above attribution would be more fitting for them.

Also, I find that "Submit a Site" in that bar could confuse some visitors who would like to submit links to my directory and not necessarily to dmoz ...
The categories I got links from seem to rarely be updated, at least the number of links there has been the same for long & so if I am to import some, it is likely to be only once in a while in case updates are available.

Any thoughts on what is best to do?

This is the response I had got for the same question in some forum:

From what I understand, you're not using DMOZ data anymore, since you have improved it by adding new links and updating imported information. The rules you refer to were written for sites like Google, that fetches DMOZ data and displays it to their visitors without any update and without adding new links to it.
There is a DMOZ forum where you can ask this question, just to be sure that nobody is breaking any copyright law:
http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/

So, as suggested, I am here.
I tried looking at similar questions before posting this, but I didnt feel satified with the responses because of the different emphases.

Thanks for any input.

The links are (IMHO) not protected by any copyright rules. Links are only references to urls somewhere in the internet. These can not be copyrighted by anyone except for the owner of that url. What is copyrighted in DMOZ is the category structure and the combination of titles and descriptions.
If you only used DMOZ to find sites you want to included in your directory and wrote the descriptions in your directory yourself there is nothing why you would have to include any reference to DMOZ.
If on the other had you copied the category structure (or only a part of it) and copied the titles and descriptions you should include the proper attribution, even if you added other sites yourself.

I'm not in any way an expert, but it seems to me at least possible that the links in an ODP category, taken together as a collection could have some intellectual value and be subject to copyright rules even without the titles and descriptions. If I were you, I'd consult a professional lawyer and/or directly ask AOL's legal department for clarification...
