do you usually notify people after they have be accepted? Or should be just check back often?

Well, if you consider every 6 months often, then yes. If you want to check a little more often than that, you can use the search function on the dmoz site. It doesn't update every day, but I believe most sites turn up in search within 2 weeks of being listed.

We have no idea. It all depends upon when a volunteer editor volunteers to do some work in that category and then volunteers to process your site suggestion. The huge majority are processed within a couple of years.

Processed doesn't always mean listed of course .....
