Hi,

I'm checking on the status of http://www.blondertongue.com

I submitted to:
http://dmoz.org/Business/Telecommunications/Equipment/Manufacturers/Hardware_Accessories/

I last submitted a month ago, but I don't think that was my first submission to the category. Not realizing the ramifications of multiple submissions – until a month ago – and that I needed to wait, I may have jeapordized my listing. I only submitted a couple times over the course of year or so. So, I hope I have not "crossed the line." I apologize if I have.

I didn't discover this forum until last month. I understand the magnitude of requests that come through so, whenever you get the time, any information is greatly appreciated.

The site is in the queue there, waiting for review.

Submitting your site "a couple times over the course of a year or so" is quite low on the list of ODP transgressions. Don't worry about it. In order to jepordise your listing, you need to be a lot more industrious.

Hi donwiebe, Thanks for timely response. :)

The site is in the queue there, waiting for review.

I understand that editors have several ways of checking and listing unreviewed submissions. I guess I've now pushed myself to the end if they were to list by submission date. Am I correct? Also, is there a way to see how many other submissions are pending?

Whew. That's a relief. :) When I first discovered this forum, some of the postings worried me.

Also, I noticed there is no editor listed on the directory to which I posted. What effect will that have on the duration of the process? Most likely it'll delay, I'm sure, but could that mean that no one will review until an editor comes aboard?

Again, thanks for the timely respone last night, but no rush to reply.

There being no editor listed has no effect on the time before review.

If there were an editor listed, he/she might not be actively reviewing that category. (The only requirement for an editor to remain active is to make at least one edit somewhere at least every four months. Furthermore, all you see is whether the editor was active the last time the category was updated.)

On the other hand, any editor listed in a category above the specified category can edit there, and any of around 100 EditAlls can edit in any category they take an interest in.

Thanks arubin.

Is there any way I could get a time estimate for my submission? I think I first submitted over a year ago. Have I pushed myself to the back of the line?

Thanks again for your support!

Just bringing this back up.

I know arubin said that the fact there is no editor for the category doesn't make a difference, but we've been here for a while. Are we doing something wrong? Is there something about our site that is preventing us from being listed?

We should actually be in a few catogories, but I figured I should shoot for one and work up from there. Is that the most appropriate way to go?

Thanks for your help,
Chris

Well, I was thinking that I once I was listed in one category, I'd then start submitting to the other categories that we are a good fit for. Should I wait or should I go ahead and get the ball rolling?

So, where are we in the queue? Are we even still in the queue?

I'm surprised that we're not listed yet as it's probably been close to a year since my original submission. We're a 50-year-old legitimate company. We have quite a history (including developing the first audio graphic equalizer) and now we're publicly traded. Is there something specifically wrong with our Web site that is delaying/prohibiting us from being listed?

Thanks,
Chris

Bad move. If you did that, you might lose your listing entirely.

You are entitled at best to one Topical listing and one only if the site is listable at all, which will not be determined until it is reviewed. However, I did take a quick look at your site and since you are located in Old Bridge, New Jersey, you could also submit it once to the Regional section of the directory. Please bear in mind that Regional listings are based on where your company is located, not where you market. This would be the correct category if you wish to submit there.

I was just trying to not ask for too much.

Okay. Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at. We have several products and services that are quite diverse from one another. Some would fit under one category, while others would fit well in another.

The particular area that we are presently submitting to (that is if we're still in the queue, I don't know if we're still in there or not) is a good general coverall for our manufacturing business. Are you saying that I've submitted to the wrong category?

One of our direct competitors is listed in the http://dmoz.org/Business/Telecommunications/Equipment/Manufacturers/Hardware_Accessories/ category. That is why I thought it would be the best fit. Am I incorrect? Maybe I should move up one level? Thanks for any help.

By the tone of your post, I can see that I'm obviously pushing too far here. We're a professional organization here, and I've been very patient trying to figure out how to get on to this highly coveted directory, and frankly arubin, that belittling post was uncalled for. If you have something helpful to add, I'd love to here from you; otherwise, please refrain from insulting me. Thanks.

Thank you, dogbows. Are you saying that we could have one Regional listeing and one Topical listing?

Thanks again, this is a big help.

Yes, it is possible to have one Topical and one Regional listing, but no more. And sometimes but not always Regional submissions get reviewed faster. Shopping and Business categories can be very spammy, so even though there are a lot of editors working there it takes a lot of time to weed out the spam and find that one site that is listable. Regional and Topical listings are considered separate from each other and one submission will not affect the other. So feel free to submit now to the Regional section, but please submit to the category I gave you. If you change it, it could possibly prolong the wait since an editor would just have to move it to the correct category.

To paraphrase hutchenson, if you had a shopping site which sold apples, you'd submit to Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit/Apples. If you sell apples and cherries, you submit to Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit, not Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit/Apples and Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit/Cherries. If you sell apples, cherries, bananas, and costumes, you might submit to both Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit and Shopping/Clothing/Costumes -- but that's an exception, not a general rule.

If you were to submit that site to Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit/Apples, Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit/Cherries, and Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit/Tropical, you would stand a good chance of having your site removed as spam. I don't know enough about your products to determine whether you've selected the correct category.

Thanks dogbows, I submitted to the Regional. Should I create another thread here if I need to check on the status?

Thanks for the note. I understood this, when I read the submission guidelines, though I thought that I should get as specific as possible. So, I went as deep as possible. I thought broader categories would be more difficult to get into.

If I were to try to move up one level, what would that do to my queue status? It's just that we've been waiting for almost a year. I understand there is a major back-up (which is why I don't want to push), but I'm wondering if moving my submission will make matters worse. Especially, if I'm trying to get into a broader category.

Thanks again for the helpful replies,
Chris

1. Check back here about your Regional submission, no less than one month after the submission. We want all questions about the same URL in the same thread.

2. If you were to submit a site that sold apples and cherries to Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit/Apples, the editor would have to move it to Shopping/Food/Produce/Fruit, and might not consider it for immediate listing, even if he has access to the higher category. You're better off submitting to the single, best category for your site.
