Sorry, but I cannot find this site in the category you mention, or in any of its subcategories.

Nor can I find evidence of an editors reviewing it.

You should suggest it again, to the most appropriate category. If you don't see it in the directory in one month, you'll be welcome to check its status in this forum. Just make sure you use this thread again.

I checked all subcategories, including Italy.

Thanks, I'll resubmit.

Do I need to check with you here afterwards to make sure my submission works? Are there any issues with using a Mac running the latest version of Safari?

I just want to make sure that everything's going to work this time.

I just suubmitted it to:

I'd appreciate you confirming it was recieved, but if you can't or are too busy, I understand and will check back here in after 40 days if it's not listed.

Thanks!
Eli

This may be stretching the rules a bit and shouldn't set a precedent, but having been in the neighborhood I see that it is waiting review there.

Status of http://www.greatcycling.com

Hi !

I'm writing to check up on my website:
http://www.greatcycling.com

Which I submitted over 40 days ago to:
http://dmoz.org/Sports/Cycling/Travel/Tour_Operators/Europe/Italy/

If you read up on this thread, you'll see that the site was successfully submitted (after some confusion on my part) and is awaiting review in the appropriate category.

I realize that the category editor is probably swamped, but I'm wondering what you think a realistic time-line is going to be for being accepted / rejected from the directory.

Thanks for your time,
Have a great day!

No change on status, I'm afraid - still awaiting review.

And unfrotunately, it is not possible to give any sort of reliable estimate on how long it will take for a particular site to be reviewed, sorry.

Hi Alucard,

Thanks for the update.

I have herad that many of the categories in the Open Directory aren't updated very often because there just so many submissions, and the editors are swamped (also there are too few editors).

Would I be able to apply to become an editor for the cycling category? This would allow me to help you all get through the backlog of sites awaiting review.

I am working in the industry and have a great knowledge of sites of cycling clubs, triathlon clubs, bike route community sites, and tour operators. Is it a conflict of interest if I'm also a tour operator, or does being Web savvy and invested in a particular area make me a good candidate?

Also, I'm a technology consultant and huge poponent of web communities and open source. I would be very happy to donate my time to the ODP.

If your motives are truly altruistic (you're not just doing it to get your site listed), then I would definitely encourage you to apply. It doesn't have to be a conflict of interest automatically - it very much depends on how you handle yourself :)

Some categories are considered too big for a new editor, though, regardless of their experience in the subject matter - there is a LOT of to do when you edit which has nothing to do with the subject directly, and the editor/administrators (called "Meta-editors", or "Metas" for short) are pretty picky. They usually like you to start with a very small category, find your feet, prove what you can do, and then move into it.

The category you name may be a good candidate to start in. You could also look in the http://dmoz.org/Regional tree for the place where you live and apply to edit that.

There are lots of options, discussion of which would go beyond the scope of this forum's purpose. There is a forum on this board specifically to ask questions like this - look for "Becoming an Editor" on the main forum screen, read the FAQ and ask whatever questions you need to.

We always like a good volunteer :)

Thanks!

Like I said, I'm a technology consultant who loves open source, but really haven't had that much experience *interacting* with the open source world. Mostly I just read news, form opinions, and we publish them in our work.

There is some personal motive here, I mean, I would like to get my site listed, but also I would really love to get involved in such a community. I think I would learn a lot.

I'll need to read up on it though, and really understand what it's about before making a commitment. I will take it seriously.

Thanks for your note,
Eli

Alucard,

I went through the editor guidelines, and although it sounds like a fantastic volunteer job, I just don't think I can make the commitment now. Thanks for the info though.

Anyways, should I be checking back in 30 days again here if my site hasn't made it into the directory yet?

Thanks,
Eli

While you are allowed to come back every thirty days, I recommend that now you know we have it, just forget aobut it for about six months.

Monthly status checks, while allowed, do absolutely nothing towards getting your site reviewed and I am becoming convinced that they are more trouble than they are worth.

gboisseay,

Thanks for the quick reply. Any thoughts on how long until it could be added to the directory.

I don't know if you're able to answer that question....how about this one:
Is there any activity in that category, or has it been stalled for the last while because there's no active editor.

Thanks again for yout time,
Cheers!

Thanks coconutz...

I've applied to become an editor of the category. I considered doing it last year and am very interetsed, but felt a conflict of interest given that I run a company in this category.

Now though, I feel that the ODP needs honest and expert volunteers badly.

I hope I get accepted, I would really like to contribute to the community, and assist all the Italian cycling tour companies in a fair and unbiased fashion.

All the best to you,
And please wish me luck!
