We are troubled by the rejection and associated reason, as our site is niether an affiliate site, nor a mirror site. It is a distinct independent site with a unique user base. Even though it may look similar to other sites we operate for other niche markets, it is a completely independent site.

I submitted an explanation about this to the editor of the category to help clarify the situation, as we would like to resolve the misunderstanding.

Was that the right thing to do? Do you have any suggestions?

You did the right thing by resubitting and putting a note. The best way to put a note is after your suggested description in brackets [], an editor will read that. Make sure you point out your unique content. Don't ever think that a reviewing editor will contact you or chat with you here. It won't happen. If you want to keep track of that submission please allow a month between checks and reuse this thread.
