Your submission is waiting for review in that category, along with a large number of other sites.

Hi -

Based on the previous post, I understand there are a lot of entries. However, I'm unclear as to when I should next ask for a status.

It has been 6 months since I submitted my request which seems to be longer than what I've seen mentioned in various articles for DMOZ turnaround time. I'm looking for a little guidance here on expectations as I recognize each category is different.

Thanks in advance,
Anne

We don't monitor "turnaround time" -- if by that you mean the time between site submittal and site review (that's not a significant datum in any case). And we CAN'T monitor "turnaround time" -- if by that you take the time from site publishing to site review (which is at least significant, because it's unfortunately not mensurable.)

Here's my general rule, which is usually false but always valid: assume the site will never get listed in the ODP. Take responsibility for developing your own web presence, and take action accordingly. If you're right, and your bacon could have been saved by any means, then you'll have saved it. If you're wrong, and our experience is correct that the ODP listing doesn't make that much difference for the vast majority of sites, you'll still have done the right thing.

And if you're wrong, and the ODP listing comes and makes a large difference ... then you'll already have had whatever promotion you contrived to get before the ODP listing, as well as whatever difference the ODP makes.

We can say this: we really really really are NOT in the website promotion business, and our feelings won't be hurt if you go elsewhere for your website promotional needs.

There are two links in my signature that will probably help to answer some of your questions. The time of review is very unpredictable. It can range from almost instantly to several years, just depending on when an editor decides to review suggestions in any given category. As far as your next request for status goes, the forum guidelines require that status requests be spaced six months apart. You are next eligible for a status check after August 9, 2005. Please bookmark this thread and reuse it if a secondary request is necessary.

In the meantime, you can check the category periodically to see if it is listed before then. Good Luck.

Hi -

Thanks for the timely response and I mostly agree with your philosophy. My intent is, and has always been, to build the site based on my content. All the same, there are viewers that rely on a DMOZ listing as an unbiased credibility source. And, to a certain degree, I do as well. The website needs to go through a submit procedure which is reviewed by qualified human editors as opposed to some directory I could pay to join or one which doesn't fit my criteria.

From my understanding the DMOZ listing is but one of a large number of factors impacting the rating of a site for search engines and promotions. It's not something I "bank on" so to speak.

Having said that, I would be disappointed to find out I wasn't approved as that would indicate to me that something was wrong with the site and I was remiss in some regard. And no, DMOZ isn't the only measure of that ;-)

Based on the Feb. reply, I set a reminder task that kicked off and prompted the last email. It also prompted the question of when do I set the next reminder. From your response, I'll forgo adding another reminder.

Have a good evening.

Anne
