Dear Sir or Ma'am,

Many months ago -- probably in April -- I submitted my site, www.OppenheimerCommunications.com, for inclusion. It's a business site for my technical writing services, and if you take a quick look I think you'll find it's professional and reasonable in all respects. I don't remember the exact category under which I submitted it, but I went to some lengths to follow your instructions, and to find a reasonable place in the hierarchy.

I just checked, and it's not listed. Can you tell me if it is still under consideration, or if it was rejected -- and if rejected, why? I think by any of your standards, it's a reasonable and appropriate site for listing under open directory.

P.S. The one thing I can find is that, when I search under Google for "Oppenheimer Communications", Google returns a link to www.writemaster.com. Writemaster was my old domain name, and while writemaster.com is still redirected to Oppenheimer Communications, it is OppenheimerCommunications.com which is now the real and primary domain name. Hope this helps.

I look forward to your reply.

Tracking submission of www.OppenheimerCommunications.com

I've received some replies that I failed to post this correctly the first time. I've read the Help, so I think I have this right now. I've included the name of my site in the title of the post, and again, here:
http://www.OppenheimerCommunications.com

Unfortunately, I don't remember (and failed to note) the dmoz category to which I submitted. (Yes, that was dumb....) Since I provide technical writing services, on a consulting basis, it might have been something like:

Business: Business Services: Communications: Writing and Editing
or....
Computers: Consultants: General and Freelance

If possible, I'd like to be listed under both, but if only one is an option, I'd take the first one. In any event, I'd be grateful if someone -- someone who understands this system better than me -- can let me know if my site is still under consideration. And if so, is there a way to confirm that it's "targeted" for the category(s) indicated above?

Thanks.

Thanks for the links, dogbows.

stevethewriter, I can't find that suggestion in either of those categories. Please choose the one best category and resubmit, remember which it is and check back in this thread in a month. Thanks.

I re-submitted, and it still hasn't shown up!? Help?!

After the last round of discussion on my Web site, Oppenheimer Communications, I re-submitted the site. This is the link I copied during the submission process:

http://www.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi..._and_Editing/Technical/Computer_Documentation

removing the cgi stuff, it is:
http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Busine..._and_Editing/Technical/Computer_Documentation

My site is:
http://www.OppenheimerCommunications.com

My blurb was:
Technical Writing Services for advanced software, electronics, telecomm, and emerging technologies: Users guides, reference manuals, online help, white papers, functional / design specifications, GUI design, API documentation, systems analysis, product briefs.

My e-mail was (and is):
Steven@OppenheimerCommunications.com

My site is a perfectly valid business site, and it seems clear I picked the appropriate category. Can anyone tell me why it has not shown up, and what I can do to get it posted in the Open Directory?

Thank you.

Time For Review

Okay, if my April submission is now there, then two questions:
1. Does it normally take this long (or longer) for a submission to get reviewed?
2. Suppose I want to go back and edit what I submitted at that time, can someone be kind enough to tell me the procedure?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

1. Does it normally take this long (or longer) for a submission to get reviewed?

It can take from a few hours to more than two years. I'm working through a heap of more than 700 submissions in a related category and have found some going back as far as December 2000.

2. Suppose I want to go back and edit what I submitted at that time, can someone be kind enough to tell me the procedure?

The procedure is to wait. The category editor will make the final decision as to the wording of the description, and this is not a back-and-forth cooperative editing process where you get to "tweak" the description. Virtually all category editors view the submitted description as the "starting point" and probably more than 99.5% of all submitted descriptions get rewritten -- since the goals/needs of the submitter and the requirements for the editor are usually vastly different. The category editor will usually only change the description (as listed) under two conditions: 1) it is factually incorrect, or 2) it does not comply with the editing guidelines.

In any event, the issue is moot until and if the URL appears in the directory. Attempting to change descriptions of unreviewed sites is somewhat akin to the satisfaction one receives in attempting to herd cats.

Hope this helps.
