I was trying to check on the status of the site:

It was submitted on or around Aug 12 to the category:

http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Ethnic_and_Regional

Any info would be appreciated.

Ooops, I hope I didn't submit it twice. "Crowded" and "not soon" sound kinda scary. While it seems like the most appropriate category for the site, perhaps it would better to try submitting to a different, less crowded area, such as:

http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Decor_and_Design/

No. The only results of not submitting to the most appropriate category are a delay of the final review and more work for editors (the time it takes for the editor of the 'wrong' category to get to your submission and send it to the 'right' category + the time for the editor of the 'right' category to review it).

Sorry, nothing new here, your site is still awaiting review in this category, along with a few hundred others.

There's no such thing as 'how far back'. Your submission is just waiting in a pool of unreviewed sites which can be sorted by different criteria.
