Hello

A few months ago I submitted my website www.drawnbyhand.com to demoz. I started to submit it in the wrong place which was:

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Gifts/Personalized/Novelty/

So I abandoned that and as far as I recall I then submitted it to:

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Children/Baby/Personalized/

The site offers hand drawn, bespoke designs on white fabric or paper items - pillow cases, shower curtains, handkerchiefs and boxer shorts and the paper items are commissioned artwork for children, usually alphabet or counting pictures, name pictures and posters.

I exhibit in a local gallery so the main purpose of the site is to provide an on-line portfolio of some of my work and to allow people to get in touch with me if they want to commission a painting.

I would be very grateful to anyone who could shed any light on the following:

1. Has the site been declined? If so, please can you let me know why?

2. Is it waiting for approval somewhere, I don't want to clog up the works by submitting again if it's just a case of this being a busy category and the site not having been evaluated yet.

Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Sweary.

Hi, it was pre-reviewed by an editor and moved
from Shopping/Gifts/Personalized/Novelty
to Shopping/Visual_Arts/Artist_Created_Prints where it awaits review

Thanks for your help

I know this is a bit of a cheeky question, but how long do you reckon I'll need to wait now... and sorry for posting my enquiry in the wrong category and all!

We reckon you'll need to wait awhile, and that's really all we can ever tell.

It's like me asking you when you next expect to draw a picture of a calico cat with blue eyes. :) The cat's got to be there, and you gotta want to want to work on the cat.

No, it's more like asking if he knows when any blue-eyed artist in North America is next likely to next draw some particular calico cat.

Hmmm a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question then!

Ok, I know DMOZ is a non commercial site but the most basic article about Search Engine Optimisation will tell you two things, one, Google is the most used search engine and two, you get listed a whole lot quicker on Google if you get added to the Open Directory.

So.... bearing that in mind, along with the fact that the section my site fits in doesn't have an editor at present..... would I be right in assuming the how long is a piece of string gap is however long it takes to get this part of the site an editor? And if I am, were I to find an editor for that section would I be doing myself and maybe some others a favour by clearing the backlog..?

Cheers

"however long it takes to get this part of the site an editor"

Does not parse. What are you trying to say?

Parse!!! Blimey! Top word, I haven't heard that one since school

I think the full sentence does but I digress.

Ok, I'll elucidate....

Does that mean there will be no progress on submissions until that area of DMOZ gets an editor?

Or to put it another way,

Does that mean drawnbyhand.com will be in submissive limbo until someone volunteers to edit that category Shopping/Visual_Arts/Artist_Created_Prints on DMOZ and either accepts or rejects it?

Are you looking for an editor for this category? Would it speed up the submission process if I volunteered? I assume that if my credentials were deemed acceptable another editor would deal with my site.

B.T.W. they're not prints they're original pen and ink drawings.

Cheers

Since all categories have editors - even if no name shows - it's not really a good question - the next one is better.

Exactly - since there are always several hundred editors who can review an category - at some unpredictable point in time someone may go into the category and decide to review your site

Are you looking for an editor for this category?
We are always looking for editors. Although it's allowed to apply for a category in which your site could be listed, providing you divulge that information, it's often better to start with another category and prove your editing capability there. In this case - that category is way way too big for a new editor.

Would it speed up the submission process if I volunteered?
I don't think so. But, if you were willing to put in the time and do a lot of editing, and get addicted to being an editor, you could eventually apply for the category, and review your site.

I assume that if my credentials were deemed acceptable another editor would deal with my site.
If you get accepted in another category, you can't ask someone to give preference to another site. If you get accepted in this category, the proper thing [in my opinion] would be to review all the sites that were submiited before yours, then review your own site, then ask another editor to check that you gave an unbiased review.

Many thanks for your help.

Absolutely, pretty much the only option in my view, too.

bobrat]One other thought - if you actually do business from the address on the site - you could also suggest it be listed in [url said:
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Cambridgeshire/Ely/[/url]

Now there's a thought..... I think there are some instructions on doing that somewhere so I won't go "how" until I've had a wee look.

Cheers for all your help you guys.

Sweary! ;)
