About a month ago my submission - www.haroldcox.com - was moved to http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Jewelry/Varied_Merchandise/H/ . can you please advise if we're still in the queue and if its got any shorter.

Site is still waiting with a handfull of others to be reviewed.
Keep in mind that there surely are equal amounts in all letters, which sums up to quite a lot of sites alltogether. Might take long till someone gets to reviewing it.

Sorry to say there has been no change to report.
I'm afraid nothing has changed. Varied_Merchandise is a popular area, and as a result, there are a lot (hundreds) of sites waiting in the many letters and numbers of the category, so it may take a while. If I were you, in order to save time and effort, I probably would wait at least two or three months before asking for an update. Sorry the news isn't better.

The Regional category you should suggest your site to would be http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Berkshire/Windsor/Business_and_Economy/ based on the location of your shop from the site.
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/Jewellery/ would only be appropriate if you restrict sales to the UK, in which case your suggestion to www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Jewelry/Varied_Merchandise/H/ would not be valid (for a Shopping listing one of the conditions is you must ship internationally).

I submitted to www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Jewelry/Varied_Merchandise/H/ (sometime last year) as we do ship internationally and hopefully we are still in the big pot waiting for one of you kind gentlemen or ladies to give us the thumbs up or shoot us down in flames - perhaps you could confirm if we're still in there.
can i also submit to

ie have 2 different submissions.
i don't want to submit to the regional one if that removes us from the varied merchandise category.

That's understandable enough! You can however submit your site to Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Berkshire/Windsor/Business_and_Economy/ as well; this will not have any influence (positive or negative) on your review in Shopping/Jewelry/Varied_Merchandise/H/. You may end up being listed in both places.
And you are indeed still waiting for review in Shopping/Jewelry/Varied_Merchandise/H/.
