No, no status request is possible.

Perhaps when you were looking through the archives you missed all of the notices to that effect.

We cannot be of assistance.

Yes, it seems that I did.

I've since read that re-submitting a year later doesn't constitute "spamming", so that's what I've done.

See you "next" year...:)
(but next time I'll just have a look and resubmit... )

Resubmitting 1 time after a year doesn't constitute spamming, but why on earth would you want to resuggest the site again when you know it is already waiting? You were told it was waiting in that archived thread, so there isn't a reason to resuggest. Any subsequent resuggestions of the same url (no matter how far apart they are) only serve to sink it to the bottom of the unreviewed pool if the reviewing editor chooses to review by suggestion date. So the only thing resuggesting the site more than once would accomplish is significantly delaying the time a review would take.
I would suggest that (assuming you already resuggested the site again) you just concentrate on adding content to your site and not worry about dmoz editors reviewing it for a listing. That would be much more productive and when an editor does decide to review the suggestion then there will be something worth reviewing when he/she gets there.

Just my two cents.
