You're not doing anything wrong. Unfortunately the cogs of the DMOZ engine turn rather slowly in that area of the directory, and no-one has reviewed your submission as yet. I'm afraid you'll have to keep waiting.

If you want, check back here in a month or two and we'll let you know if the situation has improved.

Heydiho. A month is up, so here's a gentle nudge nudge about this status request. Any news?

Not quite a month and your site has the same status: Unreviewed.
Be patient and try back in a few months. Eventually someone will review it. :)

Sorry, nothing new here. Still waiting...
Unfortunately the whole area is quite backlogged.

Hi there Senox,

Thanks for getting back to me. Is there anything I can do to resolve this? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Yours

Hi there editors,

So, first off, I know that this is all voluntary, and if I ever passed the strict rules for being an editor (believe me I have tried) I would help you people out.

The issue that I have here is time. My original submission for this category was back in November 2002. I then resubmitted in February 2003, and started this thread on resource zone.

What can I do? Is there really a back-up in this category which is taking a year+ to work through? Would I be best served by resubmitting?

I don't want to criticize, because the ODP is a great tool and a great community of editors. But somewhere, a line needs to be drawn. Is the editor not working this category anymore?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. If there is anything that I need to do, then please let me know.

Thanks

Thank you for trying. We appreciate the effort, definitely.

What can I do?
As far as getting your site reviewed in this category, there is nothing more you can do. You have made the suggestion have the site added to the category. You can do no more than that.

Is there really a back-up in this category which is taking a year+ to work through?
Yes, there is. There are not many editors who feel comfortable or have the time to edit in this area, so yes, the wait might well be long.

Would I be best served by resubmitting?
Not to that category, no. In fact that could possibly delay the site being reviewed for inclusion in the directory.

However, I do have one suggestion - because your company is located in San Mateo, California, you might also be considered for a listing in the category http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/California/Localities/S/San_Mateo/Business_and_Economy/ you might find that a review there might be quicker, and submitting there should not jeopardise the review in the category about which you enquire.

I don't want to criticize, because the ODP is a great tool and a great community of editors. But somewhere, a line needs to be drawn.
OK, and what line do you think it reasonable and (above all) practical to draw? We are all volunteer editors and we use our editing time as we wish.

Is the editor not working this category anymore?
There is no NAMED editor for this category, but there are upwards of 100 editors that could edit this category.

Hope this helps claify the situation.

Alucard,

Thanks for the rapid and detailed response. I am now going to:

1. Apply to be an editor for this section, as I
am comfortable in this space, and perhaps I can help out.

2. Submit the site to the San Mateo section - great idea.

3. Take an overdose of patience pills.

Many thanks for your feedback, and keep up the good work.
;)

I hate to pour cold water on your ethusiasm, but the category you named is far too big for a new editor to get approval to edit. I would strongly advise you to apply to a much smaller subcat of that, get in, find your feet and learn about how the ODP editing mechanisms work (they are NOT easy, believe me). Then you can work your way "up" the tree.

Applying to be an editor shouldn't be seen as a way to get "your" site in the directory - that is looked upon with some scepticism. It's a labour of love, in a lot of ways. I would suggest you do some readong around in this forum and over at the ODP about what it takes to be an editor. :)

Hi there Alucard,

Woops - too late - submission has just gone in. Ho hum - I guess the powers that be at ODP may push me into a smaller category.

Thanks for your advice - I am not volunteering to be an editor to get my site listed - I have been looking around for some time to find a category that would be a good fit for me, and where an editor was needed.

Would you recommend me submitting to the other area in the ODP per my previous posting? Or will that do more harm than good?

Many thanks for all your time today.

My advice would be to take a look around the various documents about becoming an editor - as I don't approve applications for editors, you'd be better off getting the "official" word from those that do than using my opinions :)

I need some help...

Hi there,

I really am at a loss now on this. Is there anything anyone can recommend me to do?

I was thinking about submitting again to a different section which might not be so busy?

It looks from the ODP data that the section I have submitted to hasn't been updated since October 2003 - is this correct and usual?

Any crumbs of comfort would be appreciated.

Submitting to another categroy would violate Identify the single best category for your site and multiple submissions of the same or related sites may result in the exclusion found in http://www.dmoz.org/add.html

And it just wastes everyones time, by having editors delete the extra copies or move them back to the right category, leaving nasty little notes about you which can never be erased from your record, and might come up in job interviews, and affect the chances of your children getting married. :p

Patience is best. :)

Current Status please - www.conversesoftware.com

Can someone check the status of this submission please? I believe I submitted this in October 2002.

Cheers.
