Status Tracking (A Suggestion)

Hello All,

I can understand the problems that people have with lack of feedback on the actual submission of a site, and I dare say it is an integral part of many of the queries sent to category editors.

I myself have been attempting to get my site listed (a legitimate business) for the last 5 years, submitting annually but to no avail.

Would it be possible to provide a simple interface whereby someone could type in the url they ruggested for addition, and then simply display its position in the queue for that category?

Simply providing a position with no further control could not (to my understanding) be misused in any way, and I would assume that it would not be a substantial undertaking for one of the ODP systems developers.

It would help provide feedback to those people like myself, who are unaware of if their site is being rejected, or if they have just been stuck in a queue that has just been moving slowly for numerous years.

I look forward to your thoughts!

Hello Jim,

Who makes the decisions as outlined in the FAQ?

How would one make a proposal to actually advance DMOZ, or will policies imposed based on resource limitations over 2 years ago be kept in place ad infinitum?

Kind Regards,

Matt

DMOZ.

First off, we don't believe that your proposal would advance DMOZ.
Second off, you can make new proposals here and we'll pass them along to our internal forums for discussion. Old proposals have already been processed or are still under consideration.

Development resources are still extremely thin on the ground and DMOZ assigns their priorities as it seems fit, not by public opinion. If you have your own company, I imagine that you adopt a similar attitude.

Perhaps you could take the trouble to read some of the myriad old threads here on this and related topics.

Just because the FAQ was written 2 years ago doesn't mean that the information contained in it is out-of-date. The suggestion to offer an automated status checking tool of some kind crops up here regularly and, as of this point in time, it hasn't been something that is even under consideration by The Powers That Be. The key thing to keep in mind is that the pool of suggested sites is not and has never been our priority so providing tools like the one you describe would also not be our priority.

Would it be possible to provide a simple interface whereby someone could type in the url they ruggested for addition, and then simply display its position in the queue for that category?
There is no "queue". "Queue" implies first-in-first-out processing and that's not how we edit. Editors may, if they choose, review suggested sites by date but they are not required to do so and, in fact, most do not. My own personal system borders on completely random. :D

So does mine, completely random. The only exception to that is if I see a site suggestion that's been submitted with an ODP Guideline compliant title and description (on the submission form you fill out). I find those quite attractive, and they get my attention. :D

sounds like if/when a site is added is 100% human? ie. no bots or algorithms processing the sites and determining value? If that's the case, I'm impressed and realize the validity of the sites listed and the importance of legitimate businesses / sites to want to be listed. Just joined the forms today and suggested my a month or so ago so i'll be crossing my fingers ;)

It doesn't mater how many people find this a "great idea", we have decided not to implement it. This topic has been discussed so many times before, that there is absolutely no need for further discussion on this topic.
