I believe openukraine was simply quoting his mailer's rather feeble attempt to impersonate a human while delivering a delivery failure message.

I've seen several posts that suggest that apply@dmoz.org is failing to accept mail. Is someone looking into this?

Yes, it's a known problem. Sorry, but the website redistribution effort has stranded aot of functionality. I'd recommend (well, beg, plead, grovel) that you save your application, wait a few days, and try again.

Alternatively, try emailing apply@editors.dmoz.org . A quick probe last night led me to believe the ODP mail server is now on the editors subdomain.

I just tried again today (4th time in 10 days)
the email to apply@editors.dmoz.org bounces back with the following message:

and, to make things even more interesting I just got the following:

FYI: The MX record for dmoz.org has been pointing to editors.dmoz.org for at least a week (since I tried applying) so mail addressed to apply@dmoz.org">apply@dmoz.org</a> should get sent to the editors.dmoz.org machine. When I have tried sending the confirmation to <a href="mailto:apply@dmoz.org sendmail has eventually timed out on retrying the delivery with an error indicating it could not contact editors.dmoz.org.

I think it's just a part of the test.
If you can solve the problem with mail error, then you can become an editor? :smirk:

All of the ODP used to on one domain, and it got overloaded.

The systems have been split up and spread over a number of different domains. To cater for people who only link to the old addresses several redirects have had to be put in place. There might be an error in what redirects to what (not deliberate, just how things are with what has been done so far). Things are still being worked on; and this will be fixed at some point.

Application Confirmation

I recieved my application confirmation, and I, too, was unable to respond. I noticed that the return address was "apply@aol.net", I tried changing this to "apply@aol.com", and, once again it was returned. I also tried sending it to "apply@editors.dmoz.org" as suggested in one of the earlier responses on this thread.

Was this the correct place to send the response or is there another address?

I appreciate any help in completing my application.

Just a bit more patience. At the moment we don't have access to the new application queue so that is why it has been hard to follow up on these problems. Hopefully everything will get sorted out in a few days and we will be able to follow up on these applications that might not have been processed because of the e-mail address problems.
