Still waiting for category change and more....

It is now approaching the 3 week mark later than when I was told my listing change would finally happen. I thought I would help our the 'reluctant to work editor' in the Excel directory by supplying a list of doorway pages, duplicates, dead links etc to this forum. These too have not yet happened.

I also note (by using *.editors.*) that my, one day to be moved listing, description has been changed to a description that is not complete for my site. Is there any chance of this changing to better reflect my site?

If I understand this posting, it simply is about "how can I have my description changed". That one is easy to answer: On the category page you find a link "Update URL" - enter your request there ancd it will be processed once an editor finds the time. If the editor finds the change worthy to apply, he will do so, if not he will reject it.

Dave, your initial query to this forum was dealt with weeks ago and your subsequent "contributions" to this forum have largely been just complaints about various aspects of the ODP. We don't mind discussions about ways to improve the Directory but posts that exist strictly to bitch aren't appropriate and that includes:

(1) Complaining about how long it's taking for the public side to update. I know that you know the answer to that already and posting every week to ask "are we there yet?" isn't going to make it happen any faster. It will happen when it happens and we'll only know when after it happens.

(2) Such-and-such category isn't being updated quickly enough or so-and-so editor isn't working hard enough. Editors work as fast and as much as they choose (and don't get started on that complaint again). Reports of problems in categories are welcome but we don't promise immediate action for anything except porn redirects.

You are welcome to post inquiries about your site per the forum guidelines but please stop trolling this forum looking for a fight.

RE: your initial query to this forum was dealt with weeks ago...

Not quite! I was told the changes would probably occur that Friday....I think after waiting a few weeks it is perfectly reasonable to find out why nothing has happend.

You seem to believe that keeping submitters in the dark over their submission is a good thing. Treating human beings with contempt with condescending statements like 'it will happen when it happens' IS "picking fights" IMO and only
goes to highlight the reason for the VERY bad relationship between submitters and editors.

I feel sorry that you see my raising of concerns and critisims as "picking fights". But that is your problem and I suggest you simply do not reply. Perhaps one day you will be able to use my concerns and critisims to help improve DMOZ..... but this will not happen when you see any words typed against DMOZ as personal attacks.

If the editors are as fantastic as what you would have me believe I would not been able to instantly pull out sites (that should not be there) from one single category which made up about 20% of that category. Some of these problem sites have been there for years! If the editor of that category had simply bothered to reply to at least one of my many emails over the years, he/she would have know that.

...and before you go into denial on the above statement you should understand that one editor thanked me and admitted the category was is need of some "TLC".

Bugs have kept the update from happening as scheduled. At least so it appears. There are also now 3 public servers, and some did update correctly, some did not. It's always possible that if you refreshed the category several times, you would see the changes.

Since it now appears that it will take several days for a full update to happen across all servers, finding and fixing the bug will probably take the single staff programmer quite some time. There is no possible way to know when it will actually be complete. Could be this week, or several weeks from now.

As with everything else we say in here with regard to the upgrade, this is mostly speculation--or educated guesses--based on what we see and the few bits of feedback we do get. As editors we are here to edit, and staff rarely ever consults us as to schedules and priorities.

Your criticisms have had an effect on me, though, as I personally plan to recommend to all editors that questions of "When will the update be complete?", "When will my site be visible?" and "When will my site be reviewed?" should probably be answered with "We regret that we do not have that information and are unable to answer your questions." since any answer we have tried to give usually does not end up making anyone happy.
