Submission in category with no editor

If a category has the "Volunteer to edit this category" at the bottom does that mean that the sites in that category will not be updated until a new editor is selected?

Also, if a site is it okay if the submitted description involves some joking as opposed to just a plain description of the purpose of a site? Would an editor ever rewrite a description to make it more appropriate instead of just rejecting a submission?

For your first question, I can't do any better than this forum's FAQ:

http://resource-zone.com/forum/faq.php?faq=faq_site_questions#faq_no_editor

For your second question, my understanding is that editors routinely rewrite suggested descriptions to meet ODP guidelines, and that a site's ultimate acceptance or rejection is based only on the site's actual content, not on the quality of the suggested description.

However, I can easily imagine that if I were an editor, and I looked in my pile of suggestions and saw two sites, one with an apparently guidelines-compliant description (subject to checking the site itself, of course), and one with a really crappy description that definitely needs rewriting, I might revew the first one first as being more promising. ;)

Thanks

Thanks for the quick response! I certainly understand about the personal judgement on part of a description however I feel that more entertaining description helps in that sense.

Also, I have previously read that FAQ on no editor in a category... In actual practice does it mean that it takes much longer for a listing to be submitted to category with no editor?

This is indeed how it is supposed to work (and in my experience does work.)

In actual practice, the overwhelming majority of edits are done by editors who are not listed as the category editor. If you suggest a site to, say, Miami/Business/Real_Estate/Shysters, what will be most critical in determining how long the site takes to review will be (1) how badly surfers need to know about another Miami RE Shyster, and (2) who among very-active state-level (or higher) editors are currently actively working across all Florida (or is it Ohio?) categories.

That, of course, is something you can't tell, although you might get a vague historical idea by periodically checking the total number of sites listed in Regional/NA/US/FL and all subcategories.

I think hutch already explained that any editor higher up in the directory, which are many, can edit there. It can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 years for a review depending on the category. Who knows, an editor may swing by there today or 365 days from now. All you can do is suggest the site and forget about it. Thats usually the best thing to do. :)
