Submission Problems Also /IP Problem

Hello - I am having the same problem that is being mentioned on this forum. I am getting the following message when submitting:

Sorry, we could not determine your IP address for this submission. This may be because your browser or ISP has cached the previous page. Your submission has been redirected to the misplacd submissions folder. We apologise for the inconvenience. Please go back in your browser and resubmit the form."

I just kept trying to submit the request (about 8 times). As I now know - the application has actually been received. I don't want to be seen trying to submit multiple entries.

The website is www.driveuganda.com and I was trying to submit it under: Regional > Africa > Uganda > Transportation > Car Rentals

Could you please advise me how to proceed as I do not have the option of downloading Netscape or Opera. Thanking you in advance and sorry for the hassel.

Tania

Please don't re submit again.

The message you recieved ' Your submission has been redirected to the misplacd submissions folder. We apologise for the inconvenience. Please go back in your browser and resubmit the form." '

Has two parts -
Your submission has been redirected to the misplacd submissions folder. - means we have received it, but couldn't put it where you wanted, so we put it in a big folder to be manually pre sorted (usually only adds a day or two).

Please go back in your browser and resubmit the form." was supposed to have been changed to' Please go back in your browser if you need to resubmit the form.
(this is more for when the system hangs or times out)

Sorry for that, easy to misunderstand the way it reads at present.

Okay - Will stop. Sorry about that. Wish I found this forum sooner.

Otherwise - hope that the website won't be penalised. Again thanks for your help.

The mistake you made is common. I would not penalize it, and I'd write a stiff note to an editor who did.

But we would love to see that mistake made less often.

I wouldn't worry. This fault has been a pet hate of mine (I've been caught out when submitting sites too). I think the problem can only get worse as ISP use of transparent caching increases!

Why has this problem not been sorted. Its not as if it is something new ....its been around for ages. I to have been caught out by the text asking you to resubmit. At the end up this must cause a hell of a lot of uneccesary work for editors <img src="/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />

Well, it's in place to try and prevent even more additional work for editors. Basically, if this "security precaution" wasn't in place then we'll see a lot more spam hitting us then necessary (people saving the submit page and continually resubmitting the data etc). Previously we avoid this by just showing a page reading something like "Submission Rejected. Please email your URL and category details to ....". What exactly happened to those emails is unknown (well, to me at least).

At least this way we do receive the submissions and they are only delayed about an additional day. But, on the plus side, we can easily notice someone attempting to spam the ODP and put blocks in place ASAP: otherwise lots of different editors would have to delete the submissions (if all the spam is in one queue then it's just a case of the senior editor 'checking' the delete boxes - otherwise editors would have to go into each site in each queue individually which adds a lot of time).

All in all, it isn't a "problem" or "bug" - more a little feature that may be a little bit too strict sometimes... Senior editors do regularly inspect the queues and see if there is a "pattern" emerging - for example, if it appears a certain proxy server is causing problems (an example in the past has been one of AOL's own proxy servers) then excemptions can be put in place to prevent this in the future .

Well now that many of the larger UK ISPs use incompatible caches (ntl.com/ntli.com, freeserve.co.uk/freeserve.net are just two examples, or about 150-odd caches), I can't help but feel that it's the Wrong Way(tm) to handle the issue. How about email confirmation or something?

It may not be the Best Way(tm) to handle the issue, but it's certainly not a bad way. E-mail confirmation is a good idea, but it would require some huge software changes, and our single (part time) staff techie is rather busy with other things at the moment. What we have now certainly helps us a great deal and it doesn't significantly add to the amount of work reviewers have to do, so we're happy with it for the time being.
