Submission problems

Hi.
I have been trying to submit a site for over a week now. When I press the submit button, the page times out and I get the page not found error. Any advice?
Tried it on 3 different pc's and all the same..

Regards.

Odd. The Internet Explorer error "Page Not Found" usually relates to the fact that your computer was unable to communicate with the remote server (in this case http://dmoz.org/ ).

Have all 3 PCs been attached to the same ISP? (It could be a proxy issue - even if you don't have one set, your ISP could have a "seamless proxy").

Have you tried using Netscape, Mozilla or Opera (under heavy loads the ODP server can be slow to respond to CGI queries - and, hence, IE may time out: the others are a bit more accepting with overloaded servers).

If you post with your URL and the category you submitted to, and editor will be able to check if your submission did, in fact, reach us.

If you could post with a brief description of your set-up ("Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 2000 Professional using XYZ ISP") it may help us track down problems like this. We are aware that a number of people have experienced similar problems (usually they get a "Unable to determine your IP address" message - but their submission does reach us OK), but apart from the common factor of Internet Explorer (we don't even know which version), we've been unable to pinpoint exactly what's going wrong.

I have also seen the problem where it all hangs for several minutes then reports page not found.

I have also seen the usual problem that occurs in IE, at least a few times. Last week I saw someone using Netscape 4.6 have exactly the same problem.

Hi.
I can't really see it being IE6 related. I tried submitting from a new pc with a clean Windows 98 SE install, no firewall, no proxy and default IE settings, the same thing occoured.
The ISP I was using was NTL here in the UK, (which i have used in the past) also used Freenetname, the same happens with this. However, This morning I went round to a friend who uses BT on ISDN and the submission went straight through.
I would appreciate if someone could check to make sure I have only submitted once as I don't want to be accused of spamming, not my nature.
The details.

Thanking you for your support.

See also my refutation of burt's 'fix' a little way further down the same thread.

The problem is not with the script that captures addresses, it's working perfectly. The problem is that more and more ISPs are moving to transparent proxies in an attempt to cut down their traffic levels. This is triggering the security system that the ODP has had in place for years, but which no one noticed before. Since the ISPs aren't sending out notices to their customers saying "we've fundamentally changed the way your connection works", submitters just assume that it's us that has changed.

Hi.
Is it possible that this will be fixed in the near future, or, will some people on certain ISP's not be able to submit a site.

It's not going to get 'fixed', because there's nothing wrong at our end.

People will always be able to submit their sites. If you read the message that you get it tells you that your submission has been received and that no further action is necessary. It used to say "go back and re-submit", but this was a mistake and I'm told that it doesn't say that any more.

>> People will always be able to submit their sites <<

At present, many cannot due to this "problem".

>> If you read the message that you get it tells you that your submission has been received and that no further action is necessary <<

That is true for the occasions when the message says that the submission has been put in the Misplaced Submissions folder. What has been reported here and in other places is another error, where the browser hangs for several minutes, then gave a "Page not Found" error.

>> It used to say "go back and re-submit", but this was a mistake and I'm told that it doesn't say that any more <<

It was supposedly fixed a week ago, to say "Please go back IF you need to resubmit" but as of yesterday was still showing the "please resubmit" message.
