Submission-Status / Category deleted

Hi,

our site http://www.blitzpics.com was listed before in Adult: http://dmoz.org/Adult/Computers/Internet/Searching/Link_Sites/Thumbnail_Gallery_Posts/Variety/B/

Although the category did not fit 100%, we were lucky to get a fast listing and didn't want to create any hassle for the editors.

However this category has been removed from DMOZ. Now we registered under http://dmoz.org/Adult/Computers/Internet/Searching/Search_Engines/ as we feel that this is the most fitting category. (We crawl the web for images, detect similarities and categorize them. Users can browse through the various categories and search for categories)

Can you please give me the status?
If the category is a problem, please suggest a different one and we will submit the site again.

Thank you for your time and efforts. Keep the DMOZ spirit

The old category was not removed - it was cleaned up recently during a complete face-lift of our TGP category.
You were correct in your first post - it was inappropriately placed, however it was removed from the directory for other reasons (blind links). Had the site not had these links it would have been moved into the correct category. You could consider removing the blind links to improve the chances of having your site listed. If the editor that reviews your site feels that the mouseovers that you've used would confuse or hinder the surfer, that editor may not list the site.

However to answer your question, it's ok to resubmit - preferably after reading the submission guidelines for the category in question to ensure that your site has the best chance possible of complying and fitting the category.

Hi Jezebel,
thank you for your detailed answer.

The links are not blind links meaning they are *not* misleading and do *not* try to trick the user.
We use the mouseover because the link does not tell anything as it consists of a numeric id which then will redirect to the sites listing the thumbnails.
We do not display the full link in the mouseover because we do not want to get spidered by users. Unfortunately we already have enough trouble with that.

If it is necessary we would display the whole url in the mouseover. Would that be enough?

A lot of effort and technology went into this site to create something unique. I hope you understand our effort to get this site back in.

Is there a way to contact the editor in charge?

Regards,
Kai

>> The links are not blind links <<

The definition of 'blind links' that we use in the Adult section of the ODP is "the changing of the text displayed in the status bar, in any form whatsoever". Since your site attempts to manipulate the status bar text by JavaScript, the links are classed as blind.

>> We use the mouseover because the link does not tell anything as it consists of a numeric id. We do not display the full link in the mouseover because we do not want to get spidered by users. <<

This is not true, the links consist of the URL linked to, encoded into standard URL format, and preceeded by the text "jumpTo?url=". Since the links are clearly visible in your source code, spiders will have no trouble pulling them off your site. Indeed you've already encoded them which will make the spider's job easier.

>> If it is necessary we would display the whole url in the mouseover. Would that be enough? <<

No. You would need to remove the mouseover code entirely.

Hi dfy,

we removed the mouseovers and hope that everything is good now. Thanks for your explanation and your time.

One last favour (before you kill me), the site is still in the review queue or is it already kicked out because of the mouseovers? Means, do we have to resubmit?

Last question. Promised.

Regards,
Kai

PS: You are of course right with the URLs, they used to be ids, but during the last update we swapped to the URLs. I forgot. Sorry...

I've taken a quick look at the site, and I can see that the gallery links are no longer blind. I can still see some blind links on some of your ads though. Blind links on ads aren't considered to be as bad as blind gallery links, but they can cause an editor to reject a site if that editor feels the change is misleading. The removal of affiliate codes from the status bar text is viewed very dimly (I didn't notice you doing that).

Your site was deleted during the recent clean-up, and therefore is not in the queue for submission. You will need to submit it again. The ODP back-end is due to go down later today down for seven days for upgrading, so submissions will not be not possible. We're expecting the system to be back up by the end of the month, but there aren't any guarantees.
