If I dont know the correct terms to use when asking the status on the submission of my website I guess it's because I am a paving contractor that works outside. I am not in the web hosting or programming business. All I am asking is for ODP to list my 1 page website so I can promote our company. I am sorry I forgot to give the date I rebmitted the website. It was 3/6/2005

OK, let's try it this way. Imagine that your submission is a concrete driveway.

When you resubmitted, you jackhammered up your previous submission and hauled it away, then repoured a new driveway.

It takes 30 days for the concrete to set, so you have to wait that long before you can come back to this thread and ask for a status check.

At that time, we'll gladly check it for you.

You can really help by doing two things: bookmark this thread so that when the concrete is set you can return here for your status check, and, don't resubmit again (unless we tell you to do so).

Hope that helps.

Spectregunner, Thanks for the explanation. I do not keep resubmitting or keep asking for the status.I was just replying to the posts . I am glad PVOOL told me that I did it wrong, So I able to resubmit it the correct way just that one time after his post. I will bookmark this thread and mark it on my calendar to check back in 6 months. I just have one quick question,I heard that ODP is the (big daddy) of search engines that is why I want to be listed on here. But I am curious on why it takes so long to be listed on ODP? When Google,Yahoo and MSN only take a couple of weeks. I will not reply to any more post for 6 months.

Thanks again

Rich, since I don't see that you ever actually received a status check, you are more than welcome to come back for one in one month rather than waiting six.

We are not a search engine, we are a directory -- which may not be terriby important to you, but to us it is a major distinction. We are significantly larger than any other human-edited directory, which is both a blessing and a curse.

It is a blessing in that our work is generally regarded as useful, and since we give away our end product (the database) we have hundreds of other directories and search engines tha tuse all or part of our output.

The bad news is that, since we are human edited, every listing has to be eyeballed by a volunteer. We don't charge for listings, and our editors don't get paid. We are also the target of a lot of malicious submissions that consume an inordinate amount of time.

Yes, we could put in a bunch of auomated systems, but those would take away the very essence of what we are -- human edited.

We also don't rely on submissions. We view them as just one source of possible content for the directory. My wife goes bonkers when we are in the car and I yell, "Grab my notebook -- www.somethingorother.com -- it was on the back window of that little red Toyota and looks interesting." She hides when we go to the Asian supermarket and I grab all the free speciality newspapers, so that I can look for cool websites.

I also have this recurring nightmare that the spammers will figure out where I live and someday my street will be lined up with those mobile billboard trucks, each blaring a URL from loudspeakers mounted on the cab.

We tell people that DMOZ is a useful place to submit, but once you hve done so, and confirmed that we have the sumbission, you (not you personally) should forget about it and go forth and market your company to the best of your ability. We'll look at the submission at some point -- maybe sooner, maybe later, but it is definitely not worth worrying about.

As for the forum thread move, think of it as a zoning regulation.

Is the company location not in a town or city? (If so, you've possibly found the right category. If not, you're welcome to hunt up the Business&Economy subcategory of the town or city, and resubmit. We'll clean up the duplicate.)

Thank you Hutcheson for the reply. As for the name of the town our business is located, Isn't as important as the County we work in. The town is located in the same county. We are listed in two local directories and they have subcatagories for each town. And that seems to hurt us instead of helping us, because we work through out the entire county. That is why we would like the Region to stop at the county: Chesterl. as the listing states above.

I hope to get listed soon as my competition is already listed with OPD and are in the Google (DMOZ) directory.

As a far as ODP is concerned, the location of your business is the important thing, not the area you serve.

Status submitting Question

I resubmitted my Website on 4/15/2005 with the city included .
Is everything correct now to be placed on the waiting list for approval?
I also have another quick question. I was reading a article on Google that stated "Dmoz favors large websites". And if you don't have a large websites or if the editors don't feel like reviewing your website you probable won't ever get listed. Is that true?

As with so many things, it's not the size but the quality that matters :) . By quality, I mean the usefullness and uniqueness of the information content, not the whizziness of the presentation. There are many websites that have hundreds of pages saying nothing. There are also many single pagers which are absolute gems.

The bad news is, the other part of your fear is not altogether invalid. If no surfer cares enough about a subject to review sites about it, ... then site submittals are likely to languish.

The good news is, our Regional editors include many surfers who get vicarious thrills exploring the small towns of the world through the local websites.

Size doesn't matter. Focus, depth, authority, do. (In the context of a business category, you ARE the ultimate authority on the subject of who you are and what you'll do for money -- just speak to that, and don't worry about the listing.)

Getting back to your last reply When your in business the focus is on money and the best way to make money in business is to advertise. That is the whole idea of wanting to get listed in DMOZ directory, In order for the search engines to pickup our website and keep it listed. It's called exposer. If we don't advertise how are the customers that are looking for our line of work going to find us? Like I stated before our competition is already listed on DMOZ and when you look up Paving contractors in our County their names pop right up. So yes we are focusing on the money end. Just like everyone else (or most) that have websites. Focus + Advertising + Getting listed + exposer = Work/Income/Money!!!!

It seems you all can answer my questions except for the important one that pertains to our submission status.

I know about the six month wait before asking again . But I still haven't got a answer yet.

The reason you haven't yet received an answer is because it's not yet been a month since you last suggested your site. To quote what you said in an earlier post:
I resubmitted my Website on 4/15/2005 with the city included .
So on or after May 15 you are welcome to return to find out the status.
