Rich, since I don't see that you ever actually received a status check, you are more than welcome to come back for one in
one month rather than waiting six.
We are not a search engine, we are a directory -- which may not be terriby important to you, but to us it is a major distinction. We are significantly larger than any other human-edited directory, which is both a blessing and a curse.
It is a blessing in that our work is generally regarded as useful, and since we give away our end product (the database) we have hundreds of other directories and search engines tha tuse all or part of our output.
The bad news is that, since we are human edited, every listing has to be eyeballed by a volunteer. We don't charge for listings, and our editors don't get paid. We are also the target of a lot of malicious submissions that consume an inordinate amount of time.
Yes, we could put in a bunch of auomated systems, but those would take away the very essence of what we are -- human edited.
We also don't rely on submissions. We view them as just one source of possible content for the directory. My wife goes bonkers when we are in the car and I yell, "Grab my notebook --
www.somethingorother.com -- it was on the back window of that little red Toyota and looks interesting." She hides when we go to the Asian supermarket and I grab all the free speciality newspapers, so that I can look for cool websites.
I also have this recurring nightmare that the spammers will figure out where I live and someday my street will be lined up with those mobile billboard trucks, each blaring a URL from loudspeakers mounted on the cab.
We tell people that DMOZ is a useful place to submit, but once you hve done so, and confirmed that we have the sumbission, you (not you personally) should forget about it and go forth and market your company to the best of your ability. We'll look at the submission at some point -- maybe sooner, maybe later, but it is definitely not worth worrying about.
