Submission Status. Is there another way?

It takes so long to get listed on DMOZ and not knowing whether you have been accepted or rejected is really rather frustrating. To me, the submission status forum had to have been one of the biggest helps to your subscribers that you have had. I know many of your forum members must have been bitterly disappointed when you stopped it in May.

Perhaps a new set-up with editors hired strictly for the handling of the status of submitted websites and why they have not been entered yet, or rejected. Your DMOZ is the top most rated directory on the Internet and a lot of websites can sink or swim by your recommendations. You have a lot of power on the Internet. How nice it would be if you could bend a little in helping us "little guys" to do it right when we submit our websites.

Editors aren't "hired" for anything--they volunteer--so there's no possibility of hiring editors specifically to give site suggestion status checks.

It's been over 2 years since we stopped doing status checks here and, while I agree that they might have been helpful to a small number of people when we were doing them, for the most part stopping was the only choice we could have made. It was a failed experiment. Whether you'll see something similar offered some day by AOL, I couldn't say. I'm not AOL. But I seriously doubt we'll ever start doing them again here.

What would you do if:
1. Your site is waiting to be reviewed --> life goes on and nothing changes and there is nothing more you can do
2. Your site has been moved to another category --> life goes on and nothing changes and there is nothing more you can do
3. Your site is listed --> life goes on and nothing changes and there is nothing more you can do
4. Your site is rejected --> life goes on and nothing changes and there is nothing more you can do

I do not see how anyone can get frustrated over not knowing..

I guess you could feel that way if you don't give a darn about your website and whether it's successful or not!

If you can't make a popular website without mooching off DMOZ then perhaps choose a different field?;)

Ignore rjodwyer's post. Wanting a listing in the ODP isn't mooching. But never forget that you don't need an ODP listing in order to have a popular and successful site.

Thank you, Motsa. I appreciate your civilized and polite answer. I realize that there are a lot of things dependant on making a website successful. DMOZ is a big part of it, though. At least 10% in the Google rankings. *Grin. Anyway, I'll keep trying all the many different ways and, in the meantime, keep my fingers crossed that DMOZ will see my site as worthwhile.:D

But it helps...VERY Much.

Many of the search engines use dmoz as their directory. Just look at the Google directory, seems to have a familiar feel to it.

The Google directory, which uses an old copy of our data, is not the Google search engine. There are many posts in many webmaster forums where people tell how well their sites place in search results without an ODP listing.
