Hello,

Way back in 2008 I submitted my site to DMOZ

I waited, but still it hasn't appeared. How long should it take? I have submitted it again to the category other wedding photographers from my area are showing up in.

Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks in advance,
David

> I waited, but still it hasn't appeared.
Three things might have happened
1) the suggestion is still waiting review
2) the suggestion has been moved to a better category where it is waiting review
3) the site is not listable and the suggestion was rejected
Which of these 3 is for the site you suggested is something I do not know (and asking for a status of your suggested site on this forum is not allowed)

> How long should it take?
DMOZ does not work with timeframes. Review of a suggested site can happen within days after the suggestion was made, nut it can also take several years.

> I have submitted it again to the category other wedding photographers from my area are showing up in.
There was, is and will never be a reason to suggest a website more than once.

> Is there anything else I should do?
No. With the suggestion you have made you have done all that can be done.

Some volunteer will process your listing suggestion in time but we can't predict who or when that might be. Elapsed times can range from a few days to a few years. There is no need to re-suggest your website and doing so could be counter-productive because a later suggestion overwrites any earlier one.

It's always possible that your website is unlistable of course (self check), in which case there's no point re-suggesting it either.

<pvgool was quicker, but I am eating my lunch at the same time>

Actually, your website is already listed in an East Sussex locality. I can't find an address on the website (as UK legislation requires) so I'm not sure why it is. You might want to fix that before somebody notices.

this is really weird! I have checked and my site does actually appear for my home town, but I have to drill down to that town to find it. The reason I thought it had never been listed is that I searched for it from the dmoz homepage but no results show up.
Is this normal?

I have added my business address back in ( got deleted when the website was updated )
Could not having a business address be the reason my site doesn't show up when searching in DMOZ?

thanks
David

That is totaly not possible.
Maybe you did the search incorrectly.
When searching for a site use domain.tld, do not add anything infrond (www or http:// ) or anything at the end

I shouldn't worry about it. It was listed fairly recently and our rudimentary search just hasn't caught up yet. If the site is visible in a category, it's listed right?

Our search is primarily to find an appropriate category from a keyword. People searching for your URL already know it :)

Hi Jim,

Sounds like you are right - that the search hasn't caught up as it's impossible to find my site using ANY keyword

I've tried "bexhill photographer", "sussex photographer" "sussex photography" etc and that doesn't work.

I'll try again in a few days

cheers,
David

And btw: The search does not search for site content, but for url, title and description of the entry.

We're a directory, not a search engine. The idea is that surfers navigate to a category of interest rather than running a search. As I said previously, our rudimentary search is primarily intended to help with finding a category, not a website.

I haven't got a problem with that. It's just that if someone searches for a photographer in bexhill, we don't show up but other photographers in the exact same category do. Therefore there's a bug in the dmoz search.

Ehhh. No there isn't.
The DMOZ search is not intended to provide links to individual websites.
Its intention is to provide a link to a category.
To find the websites you will have to go to the category and look at all the sites listed there.

I See. In that case is there a way to be moved to a category that contains other photographers in my county? At the moment I am in arts and entertainment because there isn't a photography category.

It depends.
In Regional we list sites based on the city/town they are located in. If there are enough photografers in a town an editors may decided to create a special category for them.
If a photografer has offices in more than 1 tity/town he will be listed at county level. But not when he only has 1 or more locations in the same city, than he will only be lsited in that town.

No. The whole point of our Regional section is that we list websites where they are based.

If you know of other unlisted eligible photography websites in Bexhill, why not suggest them to the same category. This will help to justify the creation of a Photography category there :).
