Yes. One.

Editors may consider listing additional pages, for exceptional sites, or in exceptional circumstances. But the purpose of site submittal is to make sure editors can find the site when they're building up its topic. And that purpose is served by submitting the home page of the site.

So then if a site has multiple pages that they want to have listed in the search engines, should they only submit the index page into Dmoz or can they list each page under a different category?

Submit only the main page, please. Submitting all pages of a site constitutes spam (even if it's done without the intention of spamming). Search engines will crawl your site whether you are listed on DMOZ or not.

You will see some sites where deeplinked pages have been listed individually. These are sites deemed of exceptional value and are added by editors or DMOZ Staff. In other words we can choose to link to individual pages but you cannot suggest them. The BBC, CNN, IMDB, Lonely Planet are the type of site involved - hugely comprehensive, maintained and added to around the clock, the A-list of websites globally. Do you have one of these we have missed? If so tell us!

The clue here is that a site that is so rich in content that we routinely list individual pages is likely to be more popular than DMOZ in its own right, therefore has no need of DMOZ listings, and so never submits anything. Ironic isn't it. Until you realise that we list such pages for the informational value - the needs of our users (the web surfers of the world) come first, webmaster promotional needs don't figure at all.

There are few exceptions to these general rules. Academic papers might be one but I can't readily think of any others. Certainly no commercial sites that are not on a par with the likes of IMDB.
