I have been asked to help evaluate the submission of a large utility's website. This is a Fortune 200 company that does not appear in ODP. It is a Electic and Gas utility with a substantial ($75 million plus) appliance replair business.

Appropriate catagories appear to include:

http://dmoz.org/Business/Constructi...tors/Mechanical/Heating_and_Air_Conditioning/

http://dmoz.org/Business/Energy_and_Environment/Utilities/Gas_and_Electricity/

http://dmoz.org/Science/Technology/Energy/Nuclear/Power_Plants/

http://dmoz.org/Society/Issues/Environment/Energy/

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Business_and_Economy/Public_Utilities/

http://dmoz.org/Business/Major_Companies/Publicly_Traded/A/

Would this be considered against ODP policy to submit to multiple categories?

Assuming the web site is only in English

1. Choose the one best category that is not Regional - most likely that would be Business

2. Choose the most precise category in Regional that represents the company address. If it is evident that you have multiple offices in a state, then this could be at the State level, typically though it would be a city.

That gives you two categories - and that is acceptable.

You could also do the publicly traded category. And I think you should stop at that point.

You should read the descriptions for each categroy carefully.

Actually, from what I understand I think Publicly_Traded is being disbanded. See http://dmoz.org/Business/Major_Companies/Publicly_Traded/desc.html
which says
ODP editors have decided to disburse and update the listings herein to more specific categories, ones which represent the major focus of each business.
You'll notice there is no "suggest" link on those pages, even the letters, just "updates".

So, make that "two English-language :cat: :cat:" . :)

Yes, that's why I said read the descriptions, but since it still says Submissions should be made to a category representing your company's major line of business. and submissions have not been turned off, I took the lenient view. [Maybe we should turn submissions off to avoid confusion?]

Further on this topic, I have a similar question.

From what I understand, it is acceptable to submit a site to ODP for its most pertinant category and then the regional category that is most appropriate.

My question is:

Is it acceptable to submit individual (internaL) pages such as tutorials, to the appropriate tutorials section? In any cases of internal page submissions, these would be high quality, informational and original tutorials. I have heard that this is okay, but I'm not sure, I'd like to hear from you.

Thanks in advance for your feedback? :)

Generally speaking, no. If an editor determines that part of your website has such overwhelmingly unique content that it deserves additional listings, then the editor will take the steps necessary to make that happen.

We strongly (understatement!) recommend that webmasters not submit deeplinks, since 99.99% of all webamster submitted deeplinks end up being a total waste of the editor's time.
